    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Weeks in this company follow a usual standard format of being on site (in hotels) for 3 nights a week and being in office for one or two days. whilst on site there are a few different tasks that are required depending on the job. The main job would be stock condition surveys but there are also engineering jobs requiring more hands on practical work.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Over the year I have developed lots of skills both on a personal and professional level. My knowledge about key features of a house and the lifespans of these features has improved, I have also developed skills with learning how a Surveying company operates by seeing the work that the project managers do when running the projects. this job has also allowed me to massively develop my RICS work with regular meetings.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • personally I was given large responsibilities from the start of my placement as within the first month of working I was on site on my own validating freelance surveyors work, now nearing the end of my placement I have taken lead role on site doing measured surveys showing the large responsibility associated with this placement.

  • I struggled with the support given within the company as I was struggling lots half way through my placement with the extremely long hours and constant staying in hotels however, little was given in the way of support during this time.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • as a whole I enjoyed my placement however I believe this is due to the work I was set in the later half of the year with less travelling and staying away in hotels. also, the people I was working with helped as everyone who works here is friendly and easy to get along with making the overall experience more enjoyable.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Michael Dyson Associates Ltd
  • be prepared for the extremely long working hours with traveling to London and further regularly being taken in your own time. at points I was doing 10 hours a week as unpaid overtime due to travelling, there is also constant staying in hotels which promotes an unhealthy and isolating lifestyle. however, I would also say stick with it as there are better jobs more local based which make the job worth it in the long run.
