    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Stock Condition Surveys and Validation (quality checking) Surveys . Measured Surveys and drawing elevations and floorplans on AutoCAD. Structural surveys and engineering work using power tools to inspect structural elements and collect concrete samples.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I learnt how to undertake various surveys and I developed my AutoCAD and Microsoft Excel skills. I have developed my confidence and communication skills from speaking with many people including members of the public and other surveyors. I have developed my commercial awareness of the industry as well as teamworking skills, problem solving and time management.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, there is a lot of project involvement. I was given a lot of responsibility due to undertaking Stock Condition Surveys and Validations on my own most of the time, including making direct contact and appointments with residents. When carrying out Measured Surveys with another undergraduate and when using AutoCAD in the office, we had to manage our own time to meet real project deadlines.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of support and guidance from the whole team, especially from my Line Manager who was always contactable if I had any queries out on site or in the office. The team were always approachable and happy to help. In addition, we received guidance and support with recording and starting our RICS experience.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • There is a good general company culture and atmosphere. Unfortunately due to Covid restrictions and lockdowns there were not any social events during my placement. Although at Christmas and Easter there were charity raffles with the proceeds going to a local charity. At Christmas there was also a donations initiative to give to under privileged children in the community.

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed the variety of work and responsibility. I liked that I had a good mix of being out on site and in the office. Overall, it was a broad and positive experience.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Michael Dyson Associates Ltd
  • Aim to work on and be involved with as many different projects as possible to widen your experience. Expect a lot of driving and be prepared for being outside in all types of weather and climate. Try and attend the CPD events that are offered if you chose to start your RICS application.
