    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I worked with the Global Broking Centre (GBC) Portfolio Solutions team. This involved me responding to requests and analysing the GBC Portfolio, along with Premium and Risk data. My day included learning the use of Power BI and DAX, and automating reporting suites. It also involved interviewing across divisions to start reviewing performance based on statistics and data. Additionally, I completed segmentation work and responded to data requests, creating Excel Pivot tables to analyse risk. Team meetings, independent learning, and side projects also filled up my day.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes. Hard skills include: the in-depth use of tools such as Pivot tables in Excel and filters, fields and measures in Power BI, as well as the coding languages DAX and Python. Soft skills include: teamwork, prioritisation of responsibilities, time-management, communication. This was especially necessary as I was given a wide range of tasks and responsibilities, and working in an online environment meant I had to reach out to meet colleagues and get guidance or gain insights. By networking with other interns and managers across business units, I believe I have gained both deep and wide industry knowledge.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes. The number of concurrent tasks was substantial, with multiple projects and assignments running in parallel. However, with good time-management and stress-management, one is able to set one's own pace and responsibilities are thus not very pressurising. I was pleased to be able to lead some small projects independently, making sure to check with my connector or manager before sending it off to a client. It helped that my colleagues were always helpful and would provide guidance whenever I got stuck.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Quite a lot, from my Manager and my Connector/Buddy. However, since the internship programme was delivered on an online platform, I had to actively reach out and be proactive to benefit from the support available. For example, I would use the firm messaging features to connect with analysts within my wider team and ask to schedule 15 to 30 minute catch up sessions, in order to learn about what role they play and the sort of work they did. On the whole, colleagues were always open to making the time where possible.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Very welcoming and supportive. The company places an outstanding emphasis on employee wellness. The firm's commitment to Diversity and Inclusion is exceptional, as I learnt by taking a Social Impact Project forward involving a campaign centred around International Day for People with Disabilities. There were also lots of different resources and groups available: hundreds of common interest groups and identity groups where one could connect with others, or look for support. People were largely friendly, welcoming and helpful. Office culture was professional, yet welcoming and not stressful.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed the internship programme greatly. There was meaningful work without putting too much pressure on interns. It always felt like the work I was doing was going towards something tangible, and my team ensured I understood the long-term goals of my team. It was largely independent, but also well-guided and well-structured. Being in London, it was convenient to come into the office somedays, and colleagues would always invite one another to lunch or social activities after work. Interns were also engaged, and it was easy to organise private social events amongst the interns in London.

  • Yes. As discussed in this rating, Aon is a very professional firm that truly cares about its employees. Working has been very flexible and largely independent: it is a place where one can develop oneself in essential skills like self-management and discipline. Colleagues are accommodating and reasonable with deadlines. They are very aware of others, and ensure that the environment is not excessively stressful. Colleagues are always willing to assist when available, and are generous when it comes to sharing their wealth of knowledge and experience.
