    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I was tasked with updating slips from an Excel to online format. I also had separate projects, analysing the wordings of different companies and researching new products. I met with my manager 2-3 times a week (more when in the office) and all interns completed an Aon United Project, focusing on ESG at Aon. There were opportunities to sit in on client calls, and interact with different teams, especially when in the office.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Presentation skills - specifically public speaking Identifying risks and escalating these How to work in a team, many of whom are not in the same region as myself There is also a technical induction on insurance and reinsurance, which I utilised throughout my internship.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I think this depends on the stream you're in. I had at least weekly calls with the director of my team, who gave me more responsibility to research and put together a presentation, which we subsequently pitched together. My role was mainly performing tasks to support the team with making deals, and seeing how to present to clients. The Aon United project was where there was the most autonomy, as we were responsible for everything.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • There was always support there wherever you looked. If I had a question, you could very easily send a message to your buddy or manager and this would quickly be fixed. When other members of the team had a task, they were always open to answer my questions and guide me, especially in the beginning. When in the office, I asked members of other teams if they had previous help and could therefore guide me on what to do. For our Aon United Project, we had a mentor and sponsors, who all love getting involved and helping out.

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Aon is fairly relaxed, even in stressful situations, everyone takes a very level-headed approach to tasks. The office is open and anyone can go have a talk with anyone else. Each team had events separately, usually on a Thursday after work.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my internship a lot - it was insightful into the world of insurance and specifically opened my eyes to the processes and work that goes into it. The working hours are friendly - my manager always said I would have a hard stop at 5:30 if I hadn't finished by then, but managed to fill my day with different activities to keep my mind active whilst learning the ropes. There was a heavy emphasis on diversity, especially amongst us interns.
