    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I would have regular meetings with my managers and colleagues, work on my project while receiving feedback and would also reach out to other colleagues for help with my project if they were knowledgeable in the area. There were frequent campus sessions where we learned about senior employees, their role in the company and got advice for how we should work and what we should do to establish our career. I also was encouraged to do external research for my project to gain perspective of what was done outside the company for my project.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I think I learned a lot of new skills during my internship especially around technical skills such as data analysis, reporting and software applications. I also feel I have worked on my existing skills and improved the, such as communication and networking as well as collaborating with a team. I would also say I learned a lot about how to adjust to virtual working and I improved my time management when working independently on a project.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility in my internship as the project I was working on was a real project and I actually had to come up with a proposal that would be implemented if it fulfilled the requirements of the business. I really liked this aspect of the internship as I felt like I was actually making a difference and it felt rewarding take ownership of a project and really satisfying when it worked out in the end.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I think I received a lot of guidance through weekly meetings with a member of the campus team, weekly meetings with the other interns in my business unit and multiple meetings a week with my own manager. I think there was also a lot of support sessions for mental health and exercise which brought the interns together and helped create a sense of community while we were working from home. I felt really supported and felt I could meet my manager if I was struggling with anything.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was really inclusive and there was a lot of events which introduced the company networks to us. We were able to join these community networks even as interns and attend events were we could network with the other members. Everybody was really nice to the interns and were willing to give up time to mentor us. Even with the virtual environment I was able to gain a sense of the company culture and it was really inclusive and friendly.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship and felt like it went by really fast. It took less time than I initially thought to adjust to working there and I feel like the campus team did a lot to enrich the virtual experience by sending us interactive gifts such as pizza making kits that we would present with other interns and this helped us to get to know other people outside of our teams. I would really recommend applying to anyone I know who is interested in finance.

  • 7. Would you recommend American Express to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to American Express
  • I would advice an prospective applicants to be themselves in the interview as I thin that is what really helped me get the job in the assessment center. I also would recommend that applicants go to events at their university if American Express are there as they often have recent graduates at the company there who can tell them about what it is like to work there as first hand accounts of their experiences are really valuable.
