The Role
I did enjoy my internship because I had a great team that I got on with well, everyone I interacted with at Amex was super friendly and willing to help me out.
I felt valued as we had good communication within the team, although from leaders it wasn't always obvious that they valued us as much as perhaps they said they did
Support/guidance was always there if we needed but they tended to let our team find their own path and solve their own problems which was quite nice too. There was a distinct lack of feedback though.
Not extremely busy, due to the nature of programming it can be quite easy to work late at night/overtime but they don't expect you to and no one should really. Luckily given the virtual nature we were allowed to be almost fully flexible in our schedules, so I often worked mornings and evenings, and I spent the afternoon taking a break from work and doing other things (this is because I naturally work better in morning/evening)
We were tasked with creating our own microservice for their cloud platform, which might sound like a lot of responsibility however in fact its less responsibility as we weren't improving a critical function of the existing system, after our internship they will use our service but they can also easily just re write it from scratch themselves.
Think its more about the experience gained rather than the skills for me personally.
The Company
Generally very good, got on well with all me team and had quite a few laughs despite the obvious hurdles that comes with being a completely virtual internship.
Pretty well organised
Due to lack of feedback I didn't really feel like i developed much personally, and there wasn't really rigorous training as such
Working from home
Healthcare/Dental
Quite appealing, the grad scheme looks really good as a starter
The Culture
Yeh a little, although think being virtual made it so much harder to go do something social with colleagues
Zilch! I worked from home
N.A.
There were a few virtual pub quizes and games
