    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a really good experience. The internship was virtual but Amex made a real effort to ensure that we had meaningful projects, an overview of the business units and chance to go for 'virtual coffee chats' with senior leaders. I was working on a very current project in Credit and Fraud Risk reacting to the COVID19 crisis and had to work with a variety of international teams - this offered a lot of insight into the mechanisms of the Amex business.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The people at Amex are exceptionally welcoming. I didn't meet a single person during the internship who wasn't willing to talk about their role and background, give feedback or just have a chat with. I think the work environment was very easy going but at the same time, my manager made sure that I had ownership of my project and was able to really own the work I was doing.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My managers were extremely helpful. In the first week they gave me numerous hours of 121 help getting to know the business and starting to code in SQL. I also had a buddy who had previously gone through the internship scheme and was there to help me and talk about any problems I was having. I was in touch every day with my manager and constantly working with (rather than for) him.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The work load was fairly consistent but always manageable. In the first week, the learning curve is steep but very enjoyable for that reason. In subsequent weeks the work load varied depending on the stage of the project but I was never asked/expected to work past the 9-5 working hours. At times I think I could have handled more on my plate but given that the virtual internship was organised last minute this is understandable.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of ownership during my project and entrusted to work with several teams.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I am yet to return to university but I think I have built considerable understanding of the corporate world in general. I have a better feeling for how a large corporation runs as specifically how Amex functions. I think the ability to concisely summarise analysis in a way that can be explained and presented to other people is very useful. I have also got to grips with some coding which was one of my goals and I think will help in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The virtual office was very relaxed and friendly. Everyone was getting used to working from home and was willing to accommodate and help the interns get to grips with the system from a distance. My team organised a happy hour in the park during the first few weeks to help meet people in person.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was remarkably well organised given that it had been made virtual at short notice. Everyone was clear with what project they were doing and where they could go for assistance. Managers were always available to help clarify and there was a series of talks given by senior leaders (including Steve the CEO) and department directors which helped to give a sense of the larger business.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The recruitment team set up several speaker series given by senior leaders (including Steve the CEO) and department directors which helped to give a sense of the larger business. My manager and buddy devoted a lot of time to help me get to grips with the work/coding/company. And my team in Credit and Fraud Risk organised weekly learning sessions to teach about the functions of the team.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would love to be offered the job - I think the work environment is great. I haven't yet found out though...

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Obviously this was harder virtually. But I had frequent catch ups with the interns in my team and became really good friends with them (Amex is good at hiring friendly people). The interns also organised catch ups with other departments to get a broader idea of who we were working with.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was living at home in London so not much change to usual.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I was living at home in London so not much change to usual.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The internship was virtual so not particularly relevant here. There were several socially distanced happy hours organised by my team to meet the team in person and get out of the home office - these were really nice.

    3/5
