    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the virtual internship at Amex. It was amazing to have the chance to interact with so many different team members not only in my team but in the wider teams. Despite the internship being virtual it was an amazing experience and organised so well!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues. I never felt alone despite the fact I was sat in a room on my own! I was definitely treated like a colleague and I really felt a part of the team. I really enjoyed the weekly team meetings, it was a great informal way to get to know more of my team members

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I spoke to my manager every day which was a great way to talk about my plans for the day and also update him on where I was with the project and just generally how I was feeling. He made sure I was implementing a work/life balance and also gave me regular feedback which was very useful.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The internship was shortened by 4 weeks however we were kept busy. Towards the beginning of the project I felt a bit overwhelmed with how busy I was but the sessions were a good mix of both fun activities like making pasta and also training sessions which were useful. Towards the end of the internship my days got less busy so I had more time to focus on my project which I appreciated.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility, mainly with my project, I analysed the data and came up with my own recommendations. I enjoyed that part of it and it was great for me to learn how to effectively manage my time. It was a good balance of being encouraged to work on my own and develop skills but also feeling supported when I needed it.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • There were a plethora of skills I have learnt during this internship that I will definitely continue to use throughout my career. One being the ability to manipulate and understand big data to come up with recommendations an showcase what I found. Another would be my networking skills, I had a lot of coffee chats during this internship which helped with my confidence in networking and building relationships.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Working in a virtual environment is tough but the general atmosphere was great when speaking to people virtually, everyone that I spoke to was very friendly and helpful. I was able to chat to senior leaders which initially made me nervous but again they were great to talk to! It was a very encouraging atmosphere as well, everyone wanted me to do well and I really appreciated that.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The overall internship was amazing, I am so thankful to Amex for continuing with it despite the difficult circumstances. The campus recruitment team did a great job of organising fun social events and the training sessions were so useful not only for my project but also in general to learn more about the teams. I never felt lost or unsure of what to do and the campus recruitment team made sure to see how we were doing.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • During this internship I gained both hard and soft skills. I have definitely become a more confident person and I always felt appreciated by the company. I really felt a part of the Amex team and definitely got to experience the culture of Amex and appreciate why people have stayed at Amex for so long. The constant feedback I received was a great way to see not only where I was doing well but also how I can improve.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Despite the virtual situation I was able to connect with the fellow interns in a group and individually and have catch-ups fairly often. The internship socials organised by the Campus Recruitment team were also super fun, like the quizzes and IGT!
