    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
  • I really enjoyed the experience - I was a little worried about it at the start but I was able to get as much contact with my manager as I would have in person, and everyone was so communicative and helpful and understanding of any technical issues. I think that Amex was very flexible and reacted really well to this unusual situation, and I would definitely recommend this experience. Furthermore, the fact that Amex sent out laptops for us to use was so helpful.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt really valued during my time here at Amex. I had so many people (both higher and lower level) who reached out to me to ensure I was getting the support I needed and both of my buddies were so helpful and really keen to put time aside for me and answer any questions that I had. In fact, everyone I reached out to put some time aside for me which made me feel very valued.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the virtual experience?
  • I received so much support in this internship. My manager and my team were all so so keen to answer any questions and I had regular meetings - towards my final presentation I had meeting almost every day with my manager and my buddy, sometimes more than one in a day, and everyone was always available via IM to answer any questions which meant I got near instant access to any information I needed.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed lots of skills during my time at Amex, with some major ones being a company wide enterprise approach, and communication. This was because I was able to reach out to people across the company (within my business unit and externally) and look at the way different Amex markets deal with problems and present certain things. Being able to call and communicate with so many people also really boosted my confidence and allowed me to feel really secure in asking as many questions as I needed.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the virtual experience?
  • Very well structured! I had a really good balance of calls and meetings and free time, so I was able to get a really good idea about the company while still having ample free time to work on my project. It also meant I had the flexibility to arrange calls with the other interns both within marketing and in other business units, and get a really good idea about people's personal journey's within Amex, which was invaluable.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your virtual experience?
  • The atmosphere was so kind and welcoming. As previously mentioned, everyone ensured that I felt important, comfortable, welcome, and listened to. No one ever acted like I was a nuisance for asking questions or for asking for their time and all of the socials that were arranged by the campus team were very fun. Furthermore, there was no type of competitive atmosphere which I really enjoyed and believe allowed me to flourish here at amex.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested a lot in me - especially in terms of time. I spoke to countless people during my time here and was able to get such a good context of their career journeys both here at amex and elsewhere, and I learnt a lot of soft skills. Furthermore, I was able to complete a number of useful training modules during my time here which gave me a really good idea about marketing laws and such.

  • 8. To what extent did the virtual experience help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • Really well - I spoke to so many people within marketing about their roles and the project I was given allowed me to explore what a full time role here at amex would look like. It is obviously a little different because of it being a virtual experience, which is the only reason I do not give the full 10 stars, but given the virtual restrictions I believe amex gave me a really good idea.

  • 9. How much did the virtual experience help you in understanding the company culture?
  • I felt like I got such a good idea about the company culture, especially blue box values. Both through talking to colleagues and engaging in a lot of the extra curricular, from socials to the lunchtime pilates and night time yoga. There was so much more to this internship that just work, and I also had the time to conduct a number of social calls which really helped me get an idea of the values.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • It was really helpful - I now know that I want to follow marketing as a career partly because it is so open and has such a range of opportunities within it. I would not have known this if it were not for Amex communicating these values to me clearly and easily, and allowing me to talk to so many people within the company and work on such a rewarding deep-dive of a project while I was here.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • I was paid extremely adequately for my time. Despite the internship being shortened to 6 weeks we were still paid for the full 10, and even without that extra pay the payment was still extremely good. Furthermore, we were entitled to a number of paid days off, which was really refreshing and not something you see in a lot of internships, especially ones that are as well paid as this experience. I am very grateful for that.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were constant networking opportunities both within the interns and the wider company, with my manager encouraging me to meet and to network with as many people as possible while I was here and add them on LinkedIn. During the process I met with so many valuable people in so many different areas of the company and across the world, so it was definitely an invaluable networking experience that will be very helpful moving forward.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • There were lots of social opportunities within the interns, as many socials were organized for us by the campus team and we were also encouraged to call ourselves and organize things unconnected to the campus team - which we did. I also had a couple of social calls with interns in other business units, so there was a huge variety of social and networking events both within my business unit and external to it which was amazing.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes! I partook in the pilates and yoga classes that ran both in the lunch breaks an after work, and I spoke to my team about the amex football teams that compete internally and colleagues can go and watch even if they do not play. There was a huge range of activities to get involved with outside of work that were very clearly communicated to me and I would be keen to partake in if I came back to Amex.

  • 15. Would you recommend this virtual experience to a friend?
  • I would definitely recommend this experience to a friend. I think every aspect was positive - within the confines of it being a virtual experience - and that I was treated with so much kindness and respect in my time here. I loved the atmosphere and the activities, and really enjoyed the project that I was allocated as it allowed me to really get my teeth into a project that felt like it would actually have an impact.
