The Role
My 10 week internship at American Express was a very enjoyable, and invaluable experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. The people in my team and other colleagues across the company, the culture, and the project/work I was assigned, all contributed to my incredible experience. I would definitely recommend the internship to others.
I feel as though I was valued by the colleagues not only in my team, but also those outside of it. I was given a considerable amount of responsibility during my time on the internship, and was treated like an employee of the company - not just an intern - which was great
From my line manager, to my buddy, to my VP, everyone across the company gave me advice and support across the internship. All of my colleagues here were more than happy to assist me and give me direction when I needed it. There is a very open culture here which separates American Express to other companies.
I was kept busy on a daily basis, whether that be work for my internship project, work for people in other teams that I had capacity to help with, or meetings. The campus team also done a great job of organizing various events across the 10 weeks that were really enjoyable.
I was afforded a lot of responsibility for an intern over the 10 weeks. There were parts of my work that I had conducted independently, and so I had a lot of responsibility over this work product - I had to ensure what I was doing was right and my results were accurate.
The skills I have added/developed across my internship will certainly help me with my degree studies and work after University. I have developed my presentation skills, having presented on various pieces of work across the 10 weeks, and this has been invaluable. My analytical skills have been enhanced, and I have also learned some basic coding skills - both of which will really help me going forward.
The Company
The atmosphere and culture within the office is what separates American Express from other companies. Everyone is so friendly and willing to help you, and there is a real fun and positive atmosphere
The internship was very well organized and there was a good amount of structure. Each week I would meet with my manager and buddy. There were also many events organized for us across the 10 week period
I feel as though I was invested in by American Express. The first week involved a lot of training - how to navigate the databases and some useful excel skills. Across the 10 weeks I also learned some SAS/SQL and was given a lot of presentation practice which I really appreciated.

Future employment prospects are appealing within American Express. It is common for people to take new roles in different teams, and also to take roles in different countries
The Culture
The social scene was very good amongst the fellow interns and even colleagues. We often went out for drinks or dinner, and even met on weekends
As I was based in Victoria, London, the cost of living and socializing was high, as expected. Fortunately, I lived at home with my parents just outside of London to save on some of these costs
The nightlife was great. Being in London, there were unlimited clubs/bars/pubs, and so there was a lot of variety. The only downside is once again, the prices
There were many opportunities to get involved with activities outside of work. We had a community day, where we helped with some of the renovations in Holland Park. There was also a sports day, a treasure hunt and a development day
