    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time at American Express. The projects I was given gave me the right amount of challenge whilst also allowing me t o platy to my strengths at the same time. The networking and social events were very enjoyable and I felt welcomed both into the wider intern team and my individual team within the company

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues and felt like my work was actually making a difference. Similarly, I felt trusted to carry out tasks and make my own decisions. This gave the opportunity to really use my initiative and I always felt that everyone in my team and the wider team was there to support me.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I felt like I was given a really good amount of support from management. I felt like I could always ask questions and was frequently given feedback which meant that I could improve in my role. Additionally, I was still given the opportunity see my initiative and be challenged rather than spoon-fed information, which was a really valuable part of the experience

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was kept very busy and always had tasks to do, which meant that I had to learn to prioritize different tasks effectively. This meant that I learned as I felt my team trusted me to prioritize to priorities and to cope in a busy environment. Furthermore, I was able to work at a suitable pace and felt trusted by my team to make the right decisions in terms of prioritizing tasks and goals.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my placement as a customer service and business strategy intern I felt that my work was valued and making a real difference for the company. I felt that I was trusted by colleagues to lead tasks and meetings and this made me feel really valued as an employee which I loved

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I gained a lot of experience in data analytics as well as both quantitative and qualitative analysis. I will be able to take this into my future degree studies as well as my future career and feel much more confident with analysis. I would also be able to take these skills into a future career.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming. My team went out of their way to make me feel welcome and comfortable in asking any questions. I was given inductions buy each team member to familiarize myself with the company. At the same time, the office was quiet enough to focus whilst working.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects on the grad scheme look really appealing as it gives the opportunity to get such a varied experience over two years. The company culture makes it one which I would love to have a future career in and meeting with colleagues and earing about their own development journeys within American Express has been really inspiring

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene was great - everyone was welcoming and there were frequent events, both formal and informal. I have gained good friendships with the other interns and look forward to continuing these friendships. The interns would meet frequently in the week for meals, drinks alongside other activities in the city.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Brighton was really fun and had something for everyone. The interns would frequently go out on the weekends and got to spend a lot of time experiencing Brighton nightlife. There are many good places to eat, drink as well as different music venues to meet everyone's taste.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are many activities interns can take part in, such as networks involving many different interests to suit everyone. Some interns got involved in the football club, speakers club, as well as many other events such as a beach clean, and going to the football stadium. I think this was a really great part of the internship due to the great work-life culture
