    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the internship. My team were so friendly and approachable which made coming into work fun rather than daunting. I think the work I was given was interesting but there were dips in my workload which at some points meant that I needed to ask for more work as some of the projects that we were assigned have different time frames.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My team were great in making me feel like a colleague that had been in their team. I was invited to their social events and was given the same responsibility as others. As well as this, they took an interest in my project and organised 'lunch and learns' in which I was able to present to them .

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support from my manager throughout the process but at times it was difficult to contact them. However, I was also given a buddy who met with me weekly for coffee or lunch and that was really helpful as they had taken part in the internship program before too.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were definitely days where I was busier than others and this was subject to the project and waiting for approvals before being able to go onto the next stage. To keep busy I would meet people from other departments and 'network' as that's really encouraged. But there were days where I felt bored or where the office was very quiet.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a huge amount of responsibility as I was in charge of the project. Although I reported into a manager I was given the freedom to come up with new ideas and influence the direction in which the project would take. This was good as it felt that as I was accountable for a project, what I was doing was actually going to impact the business rather than just doing ad hoc work.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I am lucky as I think that my degree has given me a lot of the skills already, and to an extent I was able to impart some of the knowledge and new skills to my team. However, I have been able to develop my confidence in networking and navigating a large global organisation.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I was in a great team that was set up fairly recently and has a lot of younger people within. Therefore, work was good fun and very social. There was also always 'treats' in the office with food and drinks around which helped to make it more fun. The office is like any other so you get what you expect in terms of the layout.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was organised really well with events scheduled in the calendar about every two weeks. The events were great, including an event in London at 'Swingers' the crazy golf place. The campus team were also really good fun and they were very relaxed. They were always easy to get a hold of, and were keen to help us improve our experience.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt the company were definitely interested in my own personal development and training. I know my team hold events to help each other e.g. a leadership skills event' and these take place quarterly. Therefore, although I wasn't able to attend them during my time, I know that they do invest in the employees and our skills.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I'd really like to work for the company, as it seems that you can move around and work within many other teams. This appeals to me as it shows how diverse the company is. The encouragement of role changes is exciting and I would definitely be interested in working abroad with the company as they have such a global reach.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The interns were amazing and we did lots of external social things during the 10 weeks independent from work. My team were also really social and there were often drinks events every week, whether hosted by us or some of the agencies we work with. Being in London over the summer was great fun.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London is expensive and so in living further out you have to commute in which adds to the expense. I'd recommend trying to find friends who are at university in London who you can rent your room off of. Everything in London is expensive but it's worth it.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are always fun places to go out in London. Around the office in Victoria there are also quite a few pubs close to the office which offer discounts for American Express employees so that helps too. THere are always people to go for a drink with and in London there are so many different nights out.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were definitely opportunities to get involved with other activities. Ranging from speaking events and skills events, to other volunteering programs. American Express are very keen to give back to the community so they encourage that you take part in those types of programs. There are also people who play sports but it's less spoken about.
