    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my Finance internship at American Express. It was extremely well structured and I was given a meaningful project with real business outcomes to take full ownership of. I was treated as a real employee and given frequent opportunities for feedback. I really felt that my manager and team were truly invested my development and I will have long lasting memories of American Express as a great place to work.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very much valued by my colleagues; I was given real responsibilities and my project had lasting business implications. My manager set up frequent opportunities to give me feedback and discuss how I felt I was getting on. I cannot recommend the experience enough and encourage prospective interns to apply at Amex.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given lots of support and guidance by my manager; he set up frequent meetings for us to discuss my project, things that I wanted to get out of the experience, and any issues that I was having. My manager and wider team were fantastic at ensuring I was having a good time and learning.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I always had tasks to do; ultimately I found that the more I put in to the internship, the more I got out of it. Since my project was interesting and my wider team were extremely supportive and encouraging, I had no issues with sitting on my thumbs or feeling like I was bored.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given real responsibility for a project with significant business implications. This was the first time that I had worked in a big company and it was a massively positive experience. With my responsibilities, I was able to take ownership for my project and rive it in whichever direction I felt was best.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think it will definitely assist me in my degree and beyond. Firstly, my experience will give me more confidence in my future studies since now I have an idea of what the world of work is like, and also since I have learnt important skills which might be helpful for the degree, such as Microsoft Excel.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere of the office was extremely positive and supportive. People seemed to really be enjoying working at American Express, and it came across by the way they spoke and dealed with people. Overall I found American Express to be an excellent place to work and I would definitely recommend it.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was extremely well organized and structrued. It consisted of a project that was clearly defined and a final presentation was essentially the 'output'. I really loved my time at American Express and feel that I learned a great deal. Overall I found American Express to be an excellent place to work and I would definitely recommend it.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company/firm definitely invested in me. They set aside lots of employee time to meet with me, introduce me to different parts of the business and allow me to learn more about the American Express business and its strategy. overall I really enjoyed my internship and I will have really fond memoires for the future.

  • Future employment prospects within the organisation are extremely appealing to me going forwards. The organisation seems to be truly committed to the development of its employees. and I would be joyed to work here full time one day. I really enjoyed my time at this internship, and would recommend it to anyone who is interested.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes there was a good social scene among fellow placement students. Frequent social events like a boat party, Brighton day, etc, and lots of opportunities to socialize and meet new people among interns but also the other full time employees who already work at the company (American Express) and wanted to socialize.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London so pretty expensive if you aren't from here but otherwise pretty normal. The organisation seems to be truly committed to the development of its employees. and I would be joyed to work here full time one day. I really enjoyed my time at this internship, and would recommend it to anyone who is interested.

  • Yes lots of opportunities for instance a finance treasure hunt which was made available for all finance colleagues in the business. The organisation seems to be truly committed to the development of its employees. and I would be joyed to work here full time one day. I really enjoyed my time at this internship, and would recommend it to anyone who is interested.
