    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • This 10 week internship at American Express has been the most rewarding work experience I have ever had. I have been given so much responsibility on my current and exciting project, and also feel so lucky to been part of such an amazing team. In addition to the work environment, the campus recruitment team have made this experience even more incredible by arranging lots of fun of events ranging from mini golf to a boat party for all the interns!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The team I was in during the internship were incredible. Everyone was so welcoming upon me joining the team, and invited me to socials, lunches and coffees with them to ensure I got to know everyone well and felt comfortable. Everyone on the team were also genuinely interested in my project and proactively set up meetings to ensure they were updated on the progress, and were able to take learnings that I found to apply to their own projects.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I genuinely couldn't have asked for a better manager during my internship. She was always there for me throughout my whole project and always made time to meet and assist me whenever I needed it. Furthermore, my whole team were always happy to help and make time for me with everything, so I am so grateful to have had such a incredible team.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I could not have asked to have more responsibility and tasks throughout this internship. Upon joining, I initially thought that as an intern the amount of work I would be given would be limited and that I may simply be shadowing other projects. However, upon joining I was given a very large and current project which I was completely in charge of, and which produced learnings that had the potential to inform the future strategies within the wider team.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I am so grateful to have been given such a relevant and current project. I was completely in control of my project throughout the whole internship, including the approach I took at tackling it and the way I went about each individual task. In addition to my project, I was put in charge of multiple side projects to assist my manager and widen my experience throughout the internship, where I was solely in charge of liaising with stakeholders and updating my manager on the progress.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This skills I have gained and developed throughout this internship have really been invaluable. I really feel that all the experience I have gained will help massively with my degree, dissertation, and career, with ensuring that I tackle problems in a more structured way, that I approach problems with a wider perspective on things, and that I am more confident in professional environments.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The group of interns in our intake were amazing, I genuinely couldn't have asked for a better group of students to have been part of this experience. We had so many fun social events put together from the campus team ranging from mini golf to a boat party down the river, and outside of organized activities, we arranged so many socials amongst ourselves.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living in London is very expensive. I found it really hard to find an accommodation to live in that was reasonably priced as London was a nice city for me and I didn't know which areas to live in. Potentially American Express could assist more with finding accommodation or giving an allocation.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • In Victoria, we have a bar nearby the office which was great to get after work drinks at. That bar also had an American Express discount which was great! Outside of Victoria, London has so many different experiences and things to do, these are generally more outside of Victoria and across the City of London

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Outside of work, there were so many social events that we could be part of. There was lots of music festivals, partner events, and socials. I was also in a 5v5 football team weekly which was great.
