    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have really enjoyed my time here; the weeks really have flown by and I am quite sad to leave. I had never worked in an office environment before I started so I was worried that I would not have much work to do. However, I was always given opportunities to contribute to my team and felt valued by my colleagues. There was good client exposure and I really liked the more relaxed office culture. I highly recommend this placement!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very valued- all the work I did contributed to what clients received. I was not an errand boy, and this motivated me to work harder as I knew whatever I did had an influence on the final outcome of projects. I was included in all team meetings, team lunches and even got credit for some of the work I did when we presented to the client. Furthermore, I could see colleagues making changes to the rotations we did based on the feedback we gave them early on in the internship. This made me feel like I was listened to.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Everyone I worked with was very approachable and helpful. When I first started I thought I would be thrown in the deep end on my own, and even though I was given the independence to perform tasks by myself, I always had the option to ask for help. Even colleagues who were not on my team were willing to help out - some arranged Excel and Powerpoint training sessions just for the interns purely out of goodwill.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I always had something to do, and this is why I feel that the internship has gone by very quickly. I feel that the programme in my division was very well structured and organised. Generally we would have two week rotations on specific projects and this was always planned in advance by senior members of the team. This structure was still very flexbile and agile. Whenever work slowed down on one project we were able to help out on other projects in the short term, and this helped me gain a wealth of different experiences from the projects I was exposed to. At the same time the staff were careful not to overwork us, it was a perfect balance in my opinion.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was not babysat at any point in the internship. I was briefed thoroughly on the work I would be doing, before being given full independence on what to do. All the work I did went to clients. A couple of the rotations I did were based on writing reports, and I had full influence on the research I did and the way I could write it up. This work would always be checked and I could ask for help at any point, but I appreciated the trust I was given to carry out the initial work by myself.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • My time working with Microsoft Office has given me the fundamental basics of how to use the software efficiently when I start working full time after university. I have also developed other skills such as time management and communication in my time working on multiple projects simultaneously. On a Social Impact Project I did with other interns, I was also able to work on my public speaking skills. Overall I feel like I have gained a lot from this internship.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was a perfect blend of a relaxed culture where you could have a laugh with colleagues and also professional enough to get work done. People were friendly but at the same time productive and hardworking. The office itself is very nicely laid out and in a very nice building, really enjoyed going into it every day.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I feel that the programme in my division was very well structured and organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had a three day induction at the start of the internship where we were able to work on our personal strengths and interpersonal skills in various workshops, before undergoing technical training about the insurance industry. This was very thorough and informative, and made me feel like they were investing in us for the long term rather than it just being a summer internship. We also had various Lunch and Learn sessions where we got to learn more about various divisions within Aon. It really reflected the 'Aon United' philosophy and gave us a good understanding t=of the whole company for future reference.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, everyone was keen to mix and there were various informal intern-organised socials in addition to the drinks organised by the Graduates team. Within my division there were monthly drinks; this was less frequent than socials held in other divisions but I did not have a problem with this.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I would not say the area was cheap, but at the same time it is to be expected for Central London. Socialising was definitely affordable in the area. Travel was slightly on the expensive side, but again this was to be expected in London.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The area is quite vibrant but I generally was not in that area at night a lot so I can't comment too much. The office is not too far from the Shoreditch/ Old Street area, which is quite lively.
