The Role
Busy, but very enjoyable. Especially good were the organised social events, which included ice-skating, pub trips, and football.
Although it may be a little daunting trying to figure out how the Jones Day system works (essentially knocking on doors and asking for work), you quickly realise that this is the way that the firm operates, and people are more than happy for you to knock on doors and have a chat.
Vac schemers receive minimal oversight, which is actually not that bad a thing, if you don't like being supervised for tasks which you can complete by yourself.
9am - 6pm on average, with a 40 minute lunch. Some people stayed longer.
Everything done by the vac schemers was important to the firm, and needed completing, whether by us or a trainee. I never felt that I was given unimportant work.
Picked up lots of useful skills, especially as a non-lawyer.
The Company
Quiet and hard-working atmosphere.
Organisation was excellent. I always knew what I was doing.
I'm not sure how other firms work, but at Jones Day I was surprised by how much of an interest the partners take in you as a vac schemer. Even the most senior partners spent time explaining how to do work.
Company Parties/Events
Recruit a good number each year.
The Culture
Most of us got on really well, and I made some good friends.
I managed to live with a friend, but I imagine local accommodation would be pretty expensive, although Jones Day gave advice about booking university rooms.
Many Christmas corporate parties!
All the work was, understandably, in the office.
