The Role
It was a great experience for me. I learned about the products, processes and customers of a company that I'd always admired.
The placement Tech Support role is the same as other full-time colleagues, so from the start, your input is valued by colleagues.
The management gave support and guidance where necessary. I was always supported if I encountered a situation that I wasn't comfortable or familiar with,
It varied. At busy times of year, we were really busy. At other times, there was time to do 'proactive support'. However busy we were, there was always a good emphasis on work-life balance so we were never expected to work crazy hours.
I was given the responsibility to talk to customers and resolve their issues without supervision. I also had input in future products.
For the degree, I developed working habits that allowed me to commit to working on my final projects. The practical knowledge of what I'd learned didn't directly contribute to the degree. The practical knowledge did help me in the future when I rejoined Focusrite. The experience helped me empathise with customers, although this time I'm making the products rather than supporting them!
The Company
There was an emphasis on having fun at work and working hard.
The support team were well organised. At times we were overwhelmed with the number of cases to support, but we were always able to resolve the situation.
There was very little formal training, and most of the training was on-the-job or learning from experience.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
I re-joined the company after graduating and I have been back for almost 6 years.
The Culture
When I did the placement, there was only myself and one other placement student. I believe the situation is different now in that there are lots placements students.
I lived in Uxbridge. The cost of living was surprisingly cheap for London, though still expensive for the rest of the country.
Wycombe has some good pubs, but not very much in the way of nightlife.
People went to gigs and events together, but there were few organised activities outside of work.
