The Role
I really enjoyed my time as a placement student. It was a challenging environment, being completely new, but I was made to feel welcome and part of the team straight away.
Being a new person into an established team can be tricky, but I didn’t find this the case. The team was welcoming and engaging, offering all the support that was needed. As well as the day to day tech support work I was also put straight onto new product projects, advising from a support perspective. I felt that my view was always valued.
Anything that I asked for or needed I was given. The training that I received to get me going on the job was also invaluable.
When I initially started, it was fairly quiet. But as I quickly learned this wasn’t always the case and I found that after a summer lull, I was challenged daily. However I never felt like the work was too much and the work never became overbearing or stressful.
Focusrite don’t see placement students as a placement. You’re viewed and treated the same as any other employee. Therefore you also have the same level of responsibility and accountability as anyone else, which is great. You feel valued and like they want you to be there, rather than just a tea person.
The skills and knowledge that I gained during my placement really set me up for my career. So much so, that Inwas employed by the company again 2 days after submitting my dissertation. Even without that, I would have been confident going elsewhere, safe in the knowledge that I’d gained enough to be able to succeed.
The Company
Amazing place to work. Laid back, but serious at the same time. Very much an open door policy, even with the M.D. Everyone is friendly and willing to talk, which is a testament to the people hiring.
Very good. I knew what was required of me from the outset and there was never any ambiguity surrounding what was expected.
For my particular placement, there were only a few courses or training programmes that would benefit me, but they were all offered and the company was happy to pay for them. Past the placement, there are training budgets available for all staff and there have been a few employees that have had additional degrees or postgrad courses paid for by the company. They invest in people.

Focusrite had been growing consistently for the last 7 years (and longer) and will continue to do so. They have market leading products and strategies that will assist them and the staff, in achieving that goal. As the business expands, new opportunities arise due to the demands of a larger business, so I have no doubt there will be a plethora of job opportunities to come in the future.
The Culture
Well...who doesn’t like a beer? Plus the parties the company hosts are not to be missed. There’s also a good social scene between the whole company, with a live music afternoon once a month which is great at getting the whole company together.
Can’t really comment as I travelled in, but from what I’ve seen when I have looked, it’s not that expensive. Food and drink prices are in line with the southern average I would say.
Again, can’t really comment as I didn’t live there. One thing I can guarantee is you will get a very good curry.
There a company football team, annual golf tournament and various other things going on for people to get involved with.
