The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at Focusrite. I benefitted from professional and personal development and learnt more than ever before about my field of study (sound engineering).
I felt valued in every way as much as a permanent member of staff. My opinions were valued as a fresh perspective, and was offered all the full benefits of a permanent member of staff. Focusrite is a family!
There was always a few people available to answer questions or offer guidance, they'd happily lend me their time. I feel like I learnt just as much on this placement as I had in the previous 2 years of studying at uni.
In technical support there is consistently people contacting the team so work was never slow, but we had a well organised, well trained team to split the load.
Given that I was a young student with relatively less experience than most, I was trusted with the responsibility of being a customer facing representative of a global company.
I genuinely feel as though I learnt more professional and practical skills in the placement year than I did in the previous 2 years of study at uni. The skills I learnt on placement massively assisted my final year at uni too, I don't think I would have performed anywhere near as well without the placement. The personal/professional developments, and connections made within the industry, were critical to my success in landing a job right in the industry straight after uni and progressing into my next career steps.
The Company
Very fun and astoundingly innovative. It was an absolute pleasure to be surrounded by so many remarkably talented and intelligent people that have so much passion for their work, and maintain such a great sense of humour and community.
Absolutely seamless. Placements at Focusrite have a long history of success and the administration and management of the process was totally professional.
I feel that the training I received was above university level standard as it involved many one to one lessons with highly skills industry professionals.

I continued to work remotely on a zero hours contract throughout my final year at uni, which helped me financially and continued my learning from within the business. Straight after uni I returned to a temporary job in Sales Admin, offered primarily on the basis of my experience with the company on placement and by the recommendation of my placement manager. I have now been working in QA for a year on a range of very exciting projects, and am still thoroughly enjoying it.
The Culture
Yes. Focusrite's placement scheme takes on a lot of students (and employs a lot of them after graduation) so the uni vibes are strong. My team in particular were very fun and regularly organised beers, curry, gigs and other nights out.
Being close to London, the rent is higher than I had experienced further north. However, the wage for a placement year at Focusrite was very sufficient to afford rent and regular social events (and take full advantage of the incredible staff discount)
It's a moderately sized town centre, so not quite the busy nightlife you'd expect from a major City. There is also University with a decent (insanely cheap) SU, populated with nocturnal students. I met the kid (now adult) from 'My Parents are Aliens' in a bar in Wycombe. Bumped into Russell Brand here once too. It's no surprise that such well known personalities hang out in Wycombe because there's so much to see and do, from the kebab van at one end of the high street to the other, with several benches in between. There's music from live bands, open mic nights and buskers. Even the Hare Krishna parade showed up there once. There are 2 seriously great local breweries nearby with regular, well organised open nights.
Plenty. As a company that facilitates the creation and recording of music, there were regular office-wide invitations to various gigs. There is also a massive trampoline park right next to the office, with dodgeball tournaments.
