The Role
I have enjoyed my placement mainly due to the constant variety of work that I do. No day is the same and all of the projects are very interesting which means that most days were enjoyable. Long days visiting different projects on site as we are nationwide was sometimes difficult but was something you get used to.
The team I was part of was smaller than the other teams so it was felt like my role was very important and the project managers relied on my help to move projects along. This gave me a sense of importance and that I wasn't just a 'tea boy'.
My manager and other team members were always there for me to give me guidance whenever I needed it. I was always learning on this job something I valued greatly. The managers were keen to help as the better I became the more they could trust me with other things to spread the workload.
Busy, but workload could always be managed if it became to much. Hard work is expected and you will be rewarded for it.
The more I proved myself by getting the basics, and then more and more difficult tasks right in the first 6 months. I was then able to take on an increasing level of involvement/managerial role in some projects.
I wouldn't say I learnt massive amounts academically to do with my final year, but in regards to practical and soft skills I have learnt vast amounts that will benefit my whole future career.
The Company
A mix, it wasn't dull but it wasn't non-stop fun, which is to be expected as work takes the priority and it is a business at the end of the day.
MDA have been running placements for over 15 years and each year they are further fine tuning the experience year on year. Cannot fault it in that regard.
We had various internal and external training as well as supporting me through my APC with anything I needed.
Company Parties/Events
Sponsorships can be offered and they will also have a meeting in the new year after the placement to judge future resourcing and job opportunity's.
The Culture
Nights out and activities are organised, some with company funding and some with your own contribution. There has been nights out, BBQs, kayaking, go karting and archery to name some.
I lived at home and commuted in, but the area is reasonably cheap, especially around Huddersfield.
Huddersfield has a University there so the nightlife is good, only a short train into Leeds or Manchester so there is plenty out there.
