    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • From starting the internship, Aon ensured that there was an appropriate amount of social events as well as a good balance regarding the quantity of work we were expected to complete. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Aon and would look forward to returning to the firm on a graduate programme.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues have always included me in tasks to ensure that I get sufficient exposure to different areas of the team. I have been given tasks which I have to complete myself rather than just shadowing a current employee thus I have felt like an integrated member of the team and thus valued.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisors' (buddy system) have continued to provide me with work or pointed me in the right direction as to who to ask for work. My manager provided me with ongoing feedback during the experience to ensure that I was getting the most from the experience, furthering this my manager provided me with good advice for my career going forward.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The start of the internship was rather slow with a lot of literature to complete and mandatory introduction material to complete. However once this was completed I was kept sufficiently busy during the placement. I was never short of work although was never over stretched thus was a perfect balance to get a taste of the industry for the first time.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I wasn’t ever given too much responsibility such as organising/running a task alone. I was given a part of a task which was a small part of something larger; my work was always checked and always had someone to ask. I would say that the amount of responsibility I was given was a perfect balance for a first taste of the work environment.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • When I look back to the start of the journey I have learnt so much over the last 9 weeks. I have developed many technical skills such as the bespoke software and excel. Furthermore the office experience has been invaluable for me and also the CSR project provided me with the opportunity to develop team work skills as well as project management.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was always a positive atmosphere and togetherness in my team and more generally in the office as a whole. I was always made to feel welcome in the office and part of the team. Overall the atmosphere was pleasant and was also a good environment to work and learn effectively.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The entire nine weeks was well structured. The training centre at the start was a perfect introduction to the industry and the culture of the firm. The buddy support system worked well and provided a good support network. Finally the CSR project acted as a good way to integrate with other business areas and develop key business skills.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested significant time and effort in myself throughout the process. This began with a full training day on the industry by an external training provider to get the interns up to speed with the industry, which was extremely helpful. Through the process there was also online courses provided by the company to increase knowledge on the company and the industry. Throughout the process the team were also extremely helpful, with meetings early on with individual team members to talk over the team and the projects they were involved in. Some team members also allowed me to shadow meetings they were undertaking which was extremely useful to better understand the industry.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Through the placement I had an extremely enjoyable and rewarding time with the company. As a result of the time and effort invested in myself and the positive feedback received by my team I would be extremely happy to return to the company. As of the time of writing I am still waiting to hear if I will be offered a place on the graduate scheme.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • With regards to fellow interns, there were social events provided at the start and end of the process. Throughout the process many of the interns met up for lunch and also some social events after work. It would have been great if there were a few more events put on by the company especially early in the process so all interns in the London office would get to know each other. Furthermore I was always included in social events with my team and department,

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Naturally the costs in London are reasonably high as would be expected. Despite this the range of opportunities and activities are vast and if you put the effort in, reasonable priced activities can be found. For example many great restaurants hold early evening (pre-theatre) menus which greatly reduces the price of meals. Throughout the placement I was able to live at home which reduced the costs.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As the placement was in London there was a range of nightlife activities available to suit all preferences. In the surrounding area of the office there were a range of bars and social activities (such as an indoor crazy golf). Also the fact the placement was in London provided access to a vast range of activities with easy access across the city.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were sport events such as five - a - side football to get involved with as well as a fun run and cricket. With regards to fellow interns, there were social events provided at the start and end of the process. Throughout the process many of the interns met up for lunch and also some social events after work. It would have been great if there were a few more events put on by the company especially early in the process so all interns in the London office would get to know each other.
