    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship as everyone was very accomodating and helpful. They were always willing to explain work if it wasnt understood and were very patient when I made some mistakes in my work. They always had nice things to say about the company as well which made me feel like it was somewhere I'd like to work in the future.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I did feel valued as the jobs I was given to do were never insignificant or a waste of time but actully added value to myself and helped me to learn new things. I was included in activities outside work like lunches which was great.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I think it would have been more helpful in the early stages of the internship to be in the same team as my manager as work was quite slowly at the beginning but towards the end you begin to know what you're doing and become more independent.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Not very busy. they were some days where I would get all types of work at the same and other days where I would have no work at all. It would have been nice to have a constant work stream.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given more responsibility than I expected for sure. I was placed on a client team and did some work there and also worked hand in hand with a charity to produce report for them.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think that the practical experience has been invaluable. Before this internship, i had no idea what an actuary really does or what actuarial work encompassed but I have a much better understanding now and I think it will help me to better understand why we learn some of things we learn on my course.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the office was one of collaboration and friendliness. Everyone is very nice to newcomers and take an active interest in them. They are always willing to pass on work and teach you new things if you've never done something before. There is a nice family feel with little gestures like sharing sweets from their holiday. Just stuff like that which makes it a great place to work.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I think the organisation was fairly good. I had a buddy who helped me to set up everything I needed on the first day and explained to me how things worked. There were also fortnightly meetings with my manager where I discussed my progress and we also set out goals and objectives that I wanted to achieve. There were also weekly learning sessions for the interns on a broad range of topics which was useful.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was a lot of investment into our personal development. Through weekly lunch and learns that focused on different business areas. We also had a corporate social responsibility project that helped our teamwork skills and helped us what it is like to work with clients. I think in my local office more could be done in way of external training but there were opportunities for internal training in things like Excel which was good

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I think employment prospects are very appealing. I have already learnt what the day to day activities are here and what is required. I think that the workload is manageable and I actually enjoy what I do. I also appreciate the fact that Aon pays for your actuarial exams and even helps to find you a tutor therefore it is very easy to progress. I would be happy to work with this company.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I think that the graduates and apprentices were quite friendly towards the new interns as we all tend to be around the same age. I would often be invited out with them at lunch times or after work so there was always an effort to include new people. There was also a social committee in my team that would organise socials amongst colleagues although these weren’t always very well attended.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I did not spend much time in St. Albans apart from a few lunch times where the price of everything was similar to London (Expensive!) therefore I can't comment adequately. However, I will say that there are some nice local restaurants and pubs with prices similar to London. Also, the train ticket prices to London can be quite costly.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I never went out at night in St. Albans therefore I can't comment from personal experience however from speaking to people I can conclude that the nightlife in St Albans isn’t amazing. There are lots of pubs but nothing much to do for younger people. This isn’t a problem though because the train to London is only twenty minutes long so anything you want to do is just a short journey away.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are. Aon are very good at involving their employees in activities outside work. I believe that in my short time there I received emails about opportunities to run a marathon, to teach school children, to get involved in charity work and even to participate on a netball team. So whatever you're interested in there is likely to be an activity you can participate in.
