The Role
Overall this was an excellent internship programme which gave a full sense of what it is like to be a fundraiser on a big project (the World's Biggest Coffee Morning).
Everyone I met at Macmillan was friendly, encouraging and ready to be helpful. The office staff were amazing: nothing too much trouble.
All staff - from the Head Office to the regional teams - gave excellent support and guidance. When I arrived there was a plan for what needed to be done each week which I think helped to give more structure, and it also meant that I didn't feel like I was going to get stuck with the jobs no-one wanted.
Some days I was stuck in front of Excel or driving around handing out flyers, but other days I was doing events, meetings, talking to supporters and so on.
I think I was given enough responsibility within the project. I had some things I was able to go off and do on my own which I appreciated. I never felt like the success or failure depended entirely on my efforts because I was made to feel like part of the team.
I think this internship has helped me to develop some skills I was not too secure about (like phoning people up and convincing them to do stuff), however, I have changed career and so this has given me skills I will be able to use to get a job in this sector that I would otherwise not have.
The Company
Very positive. We all worked hard but there was room to take some time for lunch etc.
It was well organised because of the planning that had gone into it, and because the person managing me had had to apply to do it and had her own objectives.
I have quite a long work history so there wasn't that much that they needed to do in a formal sense. However the Macmillan official induction was thorough.
Hopefully good! They were at pains to give as much help as they could in gaining employment within the sector. They had heads of dept come to meetings to speak to us and we got a staff profile each week from Head Office
The Culture
We didn't really get into that, although living in newcastle it is easy to socialise with others!
I live in the area so I can't really comment here.
Newcastle nightlife is great.
Not really, except ones which were related to the project.
