    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I very much enjoy my placement. I am gaining a wealth of knowledge at one of the biggest engineering, construction and procurement. What I love about this placement is that even though the company is vast I am taught on a one to one level and gain experience from some of the industries leading experts.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I would say a 9. There is a fantastic work ethic at Fluor and you cant help but feel driven to work smarter and harder. I felt all my views were taken on board and any queries I had were thoroughly explained to my benefit.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I have 1 to 1 guidance from the HSE director for UK/Ireland as well as the Construction Coordinator for the UK. At Fluor there is a very flat hierarchy making it very simple to access information and guidance. If I had any questions they were all answered. Any questions I had about any sector of the company were explained by the leading people in that sector, as an example, I had a question about sales within the company, as such I had a half hour meeting with the director of sales in the UK office.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • From the start to where I am now the work load was very well structured so as to slowly bring me into the company and help learn their systems and methods. As time has gone on I have steadily gained more and more work load which has been incredibly well managed.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • This again depended upon how I was managing each task that was given, there was no work given that I could not manage and as time has gone on I have gained more responsibility. However, going back to what I said earlier, if I was at any point stuck, at Fluor you are encouraged to ask questions and get help from people to expand your learning.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I can honestly give this a 10. Due to Fluor's vast wealth of information, construction history and fantastic work structure I am able to investigate and explore the routes of engineering and construction that appeal to me that will allow me thrive at university and write the dissertation that I want.
