    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoying my placement the work is interesting, varied, and challenging The people are welcoming and supportive, and the learning opportunities are vast.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I have been asked to help on a number of projects doing various different things and each time I have been thanked for doing the work no matter how minor. I was also shown how my work fits into larger projects and proposal and how its used in conjunction with other work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • From being told my bosses itinerary at the beginning of each day so I always know where they are, to being able to sit with the project leads, supervisors, and managers any time I needed so that they could explain what was needed why we were doing it and what it would lead to. I was also given the space when doing write up to be able to structure them how I wanted.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Depended on the day! My boss always ensures that I had something to do, due to the nature of the proposal and projects I am working on the workload ebbs and flows. I am never left to struggle with a huge pile of work although I am pushed to see what I can handle, and sometimes you have to wait for feedback before proceeding.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a project to head up where I had to contact vendors, arrange schedules, budgets, quizzes and prizes, book rooms, liaise with security and facilities management, and communications. Whilst working as part of proposal and project teams I am given a decent amount of responsibilities and my boss gives me actions which I am in charge of seeing completed.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • From the technical knowledge I am acquiring to the dynamic of working with a successful team will aid me in studies. It has also shown me the type of manager I want to be and how to treat people in a team.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It varies depending on the location whilst in the UK office I was in the Construction Department and it was very chatty and had a great energy. It was a very open office where you could ask anyone around you about pretty much anything. The Construction Department is very small considering the size of the Company and they form a tight knit group which look out for one another.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The Construction Intern Program (CIP) has been running for several years and is well established within the company. Fluor knows what they are looking for from their Interns and they structured the work to find out what each intern has to offer and how well they cope or adapt to situations. Having said that you are not asked to do task merely for the sake of you doing them you work as part of the team.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was putting on different training and earn accreditation within Fluor, they allowed me to work along side those that at the top and to learn from them. The sent me to Amsterdam so that I may have a chance to be part of a proposal.

    Healthcare from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • So far I have really enjoyed my time with Fluor, the work is interesting and challenging however its the people which make the company what it is and Fluor has great people working for them. The opportunities which they offer are unlike any other placement I saw and the size and scale of the projects are immense. The year spent with them is a year long interview, for both sides Fluor gets to know the Interns and see who they are, what there capable of and what they want for a future career. Similarly the Intern learn those things about themselves and also whether Fluor is the company for them.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Fluor has several Social group probably most notable was the GAP group for Graduates which Interns can get involved with, they do all sorts of things and have activities to please all. As CIP is a few years old there are also those returning to Fluor who were the previous Interns and they form another support group who look out for one another. They also do a fair amount of socializing outside of work.

  • In the Farmborough Office there wasn't a lot but then I was transferred to Amsterdam and I'm pretty sure that answers that question.

    3/5
