The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Bechtel. I was given opportunities to gain a real insight into the Rail industry and felt I’ve contributed to something bigger than I could have imagined.
I always felt valued by colleagues. They always took time to explain how the piece of work contributed to the whole project. The included me in office traditions and always made me feel welcome and important.
I was set various tasks to complete during my internship. I was first briefed on the work set and then given guidelines on how to complete it. The great this was they were always looking for my input on how the work could be done to an even greater standard and if I was confused about a particular problem , they would set aside 10-15mins to explain in further detail the job at hand.
I was very busy. Alongside the work I would complete for my team. We had various site visits and numerous client or contractor meetings. In addition to this I would meet up weekly with the other interns to learn more about what Bechtel do.
I was given a good amount responsibility. At the weekly meetings my team would ensure that I had enough work to see me through the week and make sure I had time to see other teams such as the project managers to see what they did, as I had mentioned this was a possible career prospect that I was considering.
The team I was placed in is very similar to my degree. I am positive that the work and the skills I learnt during this internship I will soon be able to implement it within my degree.
The Company
The general atmosphere is very friendly. We had a hot desk system within our office that meant no-one had a designated seat. Most days I was sitting next to people in completely different departments and it was nice to have a chat with them. It meant I interacted with a lot of people other than the people in my team.
The internship was very well organised! I enjoyed the weekly presentations we had at Bechtel HQ in Pilgrim St. It was a chance to meet with the other interns and catch up. Every week someone from a different function at Bechtel would give us a presentation on what they do. We also had site visits set up for us as well as socials.
I wasn’t always able to access all of the training and development available to me because I worked at a different office.

Very appealing! After experiencing this internship I would love nothing more than to re-join as a Graduate. There are so many opportunities and so much fluidity between the different functions. So I don't have the daunting pressure to pick a set career path right now.
The Culture
Yes! We went for drink and dinner. On one occasion we went to make dinner a colleagues home. Very enjoyable social scene.
I live in London. So I was very accustom to the living cost that London Offers. If you worked in remote offices Bechtel footed the bill. Its expensive however the Bechtel intership is paid so you are able to cover your costs.
We didn't tend to go in Paddington just because we didn't know the area well for its nightlife. We sometimes went for drink on a Friday evening. We would go to places nearby like Shoreditch.
Yes! Numerous. Bechtel offer a programme call Next Gen. They had various activities to get involved in like attending Royal Ascot.
