    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the experience of being part of such a large company and such a big project. Taught me a lot about the office bureaucracy and how such projects are managed and run.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Quite a lot. Everyone was very welcoming and was very approachable for help or assistance. Yet at the same time they gave you enough space to do what you needed to do.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • To a large extent, they were mostly available for support and guidance if I needed it.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Fluctuated quite a lot, when they gave me tasks to do I was quite busy and it was interesting. Unfortunately one of the tasks I was set fell through so towards the end of the intern there was not a lot to do and occasionally found myself bored.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Over the tasks I was set I was given quite a lot of responsibility and trust to do them my own way. I wasn't pestered or checked up on regularly or told to do things a different way. I was trusted that I would get it done.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think they will assist me quite a lot. As the methods of communication and etiquette used in a company as large/varied as Bechtel is something I have not experienced before and can be applied to some extent to pretty much all companies large or small. Also the knowledge of how companies work and function and how to use this to get the information you require can easily be applied to other areas of life including university studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I spent time in two offices over the course of the intern. One of them was a lot more relaxed than the other. The first was more casual, relaxed and fun. Whereas I think because the second office contained a higher proportion of senior individuals it was more serious and less gregarious than the first, with much less talking between personnel. Not necessarily a complaint but it did make it slightly harder as an intern to work, especially for an extroverted individual such as myself.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was relatively well organized at the start. However unfortunately one of the tasks I was meant to be on fell through and it became less organized after that as we were trying to find things to do. Then it got too close to the end of my intern to make it worthwhile starting something new.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They invested a reasonable extent I suppose. I was provided with most of the materials required to do the tasks I was set. All the programmes I needed to use I was given a lot of support on.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I'm not really at the stage of thinking about a job but I feel positive about another intern or placement.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes there was a good social scene. We had these weekly meetings which were good as they gave you a chance to meet everyone. However unfortunately they were not enforced so the rate of attendance varied quite a lot from good to not so good. We independently organized events such as drinks and were given the means to do so. However perhaps a structured event might have been fun.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of socializing was relatively high but that's just because of the location (in a big city). I lived at home during my intern.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife was great (big city) but consequently expensive.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We were encouraged to get involved the activities that existed and it was easy to do so.

    4/5
