The Role
As a whole, the experience was incredibly enjoyable, I was given very meaningful and worthwhile work from day one, and was quickly integrated into the project team, and also given the opportunity to meet a variety of people from a range of functions and areas on the project. This gave me a great insight into the scope of work that was being delivered, and also the way that work is carried out across the company.
At all times I was treated with respect and as an equal. I really appreciated the efforts made by the team to make me feel integrated from day one.
Although my supervisor was quite busy, I soon made relationships with other members of of the team, that were happy to help assist with the work I was doing.
I was always busy. If there was a day when the work was slower, it was possible to develop my skills on the Bechtel university, where there are many courses that could further my education and development.
Although supervised, the majority of the work I was doing i was able to make my own decisions.
I believe the skills I develop will assist me further along when I start my career, I have been able to develop my excel skills, which although won't be necessary for my degree, I know will be useful when I get into the world of work. I have also developed my communication skills, on both a 1 on 1 basis and with presentation work. I know this will help me both at work and in most environments at university, with group projects etc..
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was also quite relaxed and friendly. Generally, there was not much sense of a social side, apart from the other interns there, however it overall had a nice feel. I was also able to meet a few more people that I would not have particularly spoken to on the project, as I joined an after work yoga class which started on a Thursday. This was a great way to get more integrated into the office environment.
Great, we had weekly intern meetings which allowed us to keep in contact with the other interns working on different areas of the project. Here we were also exposed to a number of different Q&As and workshops, which developed our knowledge of the company, and exposed us to the range of work that was being carried out. We also had a great HR contact that ensured if anything did go wrong, there would be a quick solution.
For the ten week internship, we did not particularly get much specific training, although we were given the facilities to self study and improve our knowledge on certain things, using the Bechtel university. Weekly after work session were also set up to help improved our knowledge of the company.
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I am certainly applying for a job at Bechtel, there seems to be opportunities on a variety of projects.
The Culture
The other interns were very sociable, and generally keen to get involved in socializing after work.
Being in London is was obviously very expensive, but as expected.
There were many places to socialize around the office, and nearby.
There were a few opportunities to get involved with NextGen, who organised a softball game, a trip to ascot and a site visit to TRC.
