    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • This placement was about using your own initiative to get work done and to help your colleagues. It wasn't a set path with set things to do, instead you could make it what you wanted. I was working at a very high level within crossrail and had an enjoyable and educational experience th re.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My manager always valued my opinion and took me seriously. He even took forward some of my suggestions after I had left. The layout of the office meant I could talk to anyone at any time, so it felt like an open and welcoming workplace.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The placement I was in was a project managers role, so I had to learn about that sort of environment rather than being on the engineering and construction side. However, you had responsibility for the assurance and the pressure from all areas to produce a good service. When my supervisor had time he would explain in detail his work, provide feedback and tips on my work too.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The first few weeks had a slow start, yet once I found a role for myself in the team I could run with it. Near the end of the inter il I was almost taking on tooucj. Yet this is from my own initiative, you have to find the work that is out there!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given access to many portent meetings, and was trusted to use the information well. Some of my tasks were in a very high position above senior engineers so I was as much responsibility as possible in my 8 weeks there.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Being able to see how a really complex engineering project is delivered is a huge help to my studies as I can always refer back to my experience in the "real" world. I also saw how the managers worked at a high level at a very early stage of my career, which will be very useful going forward.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The feeling in the office was excellent due to the open desk policy, so my manager was always very close by. People in the office were very welcoming and keen to include me and help me learn.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was excellently set up, with weekly meetings with other interns from around the project, who you would not usually see on your day to day work. There was a great social aspect to the work and interesting events every week about working at the company in the future.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt a lot of effort had gone into choosing the candidates and it showed. They invested a lot in the time at the internship and from my manager, who like many in the company was very busy, yet still had the time to see me regularly.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • This was always a consideration in the internship and the time spent near the end of the internship completing goals was very useful to review for my development I the company. You also had the opportunity to talk to graduates I the company and the graduate scheme seems very attractive for going forward in the future.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The weekly meetings with the 10 other interns me at we saw enough of each other without getting in each other's way. I am still friends with many of them and the social event s were almost weekly. Bechtel also had good events with company workers that were fun and were another chance to get to know the company well.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Being London, it was quite expensive! It is ideal however if you have a student/family house there. You are also paid more than the London wage, so it's not too much of a worry.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Very good- it's london!

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes there were many! I recommend I take the opportunity to go to as many as you can to make friends in the company and network.
