The Role
I enjoyed housekeeping the least because the job was very monotonous and I didn't get much of a chance to work as part of a team and I didn't feel challenged. I enjoyed my time in the kitchen, even though I was the only girl in there! My favourite part of my placement was the three months duty management. I really felt like I'd achieved something and I was more confident.
Most of my colleagues were very supportive and I felt like I was a valued member of the team.
I got the chance to do everything I wanted to do and could ask lots of questions. I was set extra assignments so I was always interested and had plenty to keep me busy.
It really did vary. A lot of the time I was rushed off my feet. There was the odd day of boredom but most of the time especially when I was doing duty management, there was plenty to do.
When I got to the last section of my placement, doing duty management I was responsible for the running of the hotel, helping solve any problems that occurred in any department. There was usually enough happening to keep me very busy!
Now I'm back at University I'm getting so much more from the lectures and seminars because I can relate all the theory back to everything I experienced practically on placement. I proved to myself I am capable and I can do anything if I put my mind to it. I will be more confident in new jobs.
The Company
I spent a little time in the office. My other roles were more active. The office was where finance, sales, conference and banqueting and top managers were based. It was quite an uncomfortable atmosphere, felt like only certain individuals were really accepted into the group. I tried not to let this put me off though and tried my best to get what I could out of my time there.
Apart from having too much time in Housekeeping and basically no time with the Financial Manager, I couldn't have asked for a better placement. I think it helped that the manager organising it had done the same course years before and understood what I wanted to get out of it. I had a placement review half way through where we came up with more objectives.
I didn't get the chance to do any extra training which was disappointing but it does cost a lot to fund this.
Company Parties/Events
It was a brilliant opportunity at the time but I could not go back there now, there's not enough opportunity there.
The Culture
Although I was the only placement student there I did get on well with the other staff and made some good friends, had some brilliant nights out.
I was lucky enough to find a house where the rent wasn't much and included everything from bills to internet.
Really good bars and restaurants. Clubs weren't great in York but it's not far from Leeds so plenty of chance for good nights out there.
There wasn't really time because I worked a lot of hours.
