    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work was challenging and it was relatively difficult to keep up with all the new concepts. They expect fast learners. The team I was in was extremely sociable, which I did not expect. There was an opportunity to go to the pub every single evening if I wanted and also opportunities to get involved with sports (I played a match of cricket).

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I was working on genuine client projects, often dealing with extremely large sums of money. This gave me a sense of being valued. All my work was monitored and checked as one would expect. My opinions and ideas were also utilised. For example I came up with a new way of streamlining a process and it was integrated immediately.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had a buddy and a line manager. My buddy was a graduate from the year above and my first port of call for work and questions. We had lunch together most days and on a whole the buddy system was extremely useful. My line manager was for more complicated questions, and who I ultimately reported back to. He was very down to earth and was always willing to give me time.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My hours were very good. I arrived at work between 09:00 and 09:15 and left by 18:00 every night. There were periods where there wasn't much work in the office, which left me twiddling my thumbs a fair amount. However, as is the nature with finance jobs, the workload always increases in the run up to the end of the quarter and this was true of Aon.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given the chance to work with some extremely large sums of money for big clients who were household names. All work is checked by a senior member of the team and the scrutinised by a manager before it can be sent out. This meant that, despite being given big clients and big projects, the final outcome was not always all my work.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Its never mentioned but having strong Excel skills is one of the most useful things for any job. During my internship my skills developed and progressed massively and this has helped my university work to go a lot smoother. I find myself using Excel for things I wouldn't have before. The finance knowledge has also benefitted me greatly as I am taking some modules in finance and business.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was relaxed but hard working. My team in particular was very oxbridge heavy and therefore there was a lot of mental horsepower there. The hours are based on a quality not quantity basis and therefore my team worked hard during the day and produced some very high quality material, but managed to get off work early too in order to enjoy their evenings. There was also opportunity for laughing and jokes and always biscuits and snacks.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well. There was a corporate social responsibility project, which involved working as a team of six to help out a local charity. The teams consisted of interns from all the different streams of Aon and it was really good to meet them and hear about their experiences. The training at the beginning however was not so good and I didn't feel like it prepared me for my work particularly well. It was a good overview but not detailed enough for each teams roles.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Very brief training at the beginning and then learning on the job.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have a job with Aon and will be starting in 2016. I have chosen to take the job because of the combination of work and play. I genuinely don't think many other careers in the city offer such prestige and pay, whilst giving you sociable hours and a really fun team to be part of. The pay for the internship needs to be increased however and I would prefer a larger starting salary, but they do pay for you to do exams.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, there was an opportunity to go to the pub every night if you wanted. There were also sports teams, I played for the cricket team and the other intern in my team played football. There wasn't as much socialising between the interns as it was mainly socialising within the teams you were working. Different teams varied on how fun or sociable they were but I was lucky enough to find myself in a team that was always up for doing something.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Ridiculously expensive as you'd expect from London. The pay that Aon give you for the internship is far too low. I rented a place for mates rates and lived off a very modest weekly allowance and I managed to save £0 from my internship. Living in London is very expensive as people know and socialising is as well. You'd do well to get a pint of beer for under £5.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Good. Full of city slickers so if you like that sort of vibe, you'll be in heaven. If not, stay well clear.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes lots. They actively encouraged the interns to get involved in the sports teams, which were immensely fun. I played cricket which involved leaving work early, travelling to a cricket pitch, playing a very casual game (I am shocking at cricket and felt comfortable), and then having a huge BBQ with beers with the team you played against. This is an excellent opportunity to network with different companies.
