    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Although the internship wasn't what I thought it was going to be (Lot's of Accounting), or what i was initially looking for (Audit), it has shown me a different side of finance which I didn't know about and hadn't thought about. This is now what I want to go into after graduation. My skill set has increased massively and although it has been a steep learning curve I have had great support from my team. I would strongly recommend this internship to anyone looking at going into the finance industry.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I get on very well with my direct team. They are very supportive work wise and are happy to help you whenever you need it. There is lots of general conversation during the day making work a nice friendly environment to be in. The wider finance team and the sales teams I work I work with are also very supportive and friendly and will help you get experience in numerous areas.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I cannot fault it. I had a one month hand over period from the previous intern to myself. During this time he passed all the reports over to me, taught me all the systems and helped me improve my excel skills. My managers also supported me from the beginning right up until the end with all things work wise such as reports and tasks. They also encouraged me and helped me set up days with other people in the business to give me wider business experience and knowledge.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the beginning of the month I have a lot of work to do and finalise as soon as possible making me quite busy. By the end of the month (around the last 2 days) my work load starts to drop a fair amount, this means i have a couple of quieter days which i use to prepare for the next busy period at the beginning of the next month. My work load is variable on a number of things. There is always lots to do but it is a manageable amount.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot of reports and tasks I do I 'own'. So I am fully responsible for the work, keeping it live, up today, accurate and relevant. I'm also asked numerous things every day which doesn't directly go through my manager, it is my responsibility to decide what I can and can't give out and who the information can go through and if I need to get approval from other beforehand. Assuming you show you are responsible you will be given increased responsibility from everyone you work with.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Before I started working for Fujitsu I though my excell skills were good. I was wrong. My excel skill level now is far greater than before and something that will definitely come in useful for my final year at University and future careers. I have also developed skills in some accounting software such as SAP which is something I will be able to put on the CV and potentially utilise in future jobs.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Really nice supportive friendly environment. At times it can get quite heated or serious and at times it can become a little stressfull, but the overall atmosphere is great. Your team will look out for you and they will help you out then they can and when you need it.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I have set roles and tasks to do on a day to day basis and montly basis as well as a few AD Hoc tasks. All of these things we handed over to me so I could do them myself. Then a Placement scheme runs along side the year which promotes a really stong placement community and helps you gain aditional experience and skill sets.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The amount of set training course I actually undertook during the year was minimal. However, the amount of time and support I was given was huge. If I was struggling with something I was supported and shown how to do it. If I identified an area of the business I didn't know much about and wanted to learn then I was encouraged and supported to arrange days shadowing people in the business that could help give me that knowledge and insight. I worked with a great team who supported me in not only the work I was doing but in developing my skill set and business awareness to make me more employable in the future.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Although the Placement community was strong I personally tended to have more of a 'social scene' with the people I worked with on a daily basis. Not just my direct team but everyone who I worked with.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Compared to the cost of living, in particular, rent, it is considerably cheaper than what I paid in rent at University. However drinks are probably slightly more expensive. Food prices are fairly flat between the two locations.
