The Role
As my internship progressed I was given more and responsibility and the work I did mattered more. My team was also fantastically welcoming and freindly and this made slotting in a lot easier than it could have been.
I felt valued by my line manager and some of the younger staff (who had been interns) themselves right from the beginning of my internship. I think it perhaps took some time to win some of my other colleagues over by working hard but I imagine this is quite normal.
My line manager as well as the other intern managers were always free to talk to me if I needed. I also had weekly meeting with my mentor to discuss what work I had been doing and was coming up. They were also very encouraging of taking full advantage of the internship by signing up to any internal training I wanted, shadowing other staff and going on site visits.
There were days when I was not that busy. I am sure if I had pestered my mentor he would have found work for me but I didn't always like to do that. THere were other times though when I had large amounts of work and several deadlines which was nice.
I always had complete responsibility for my own work and meeting deadlines. As the internship progressed I got more responsibility such as batching payments and writing applications for funding to trusts.
A lot of the skills I developed will be great when I apply for paid work. It really has been invaluable. I also received great careers advice and support re-writing my CV
The Company
The team was incredibly welcoming and friendly
I had a line manager who was responsible for delegating me work. If he had a lot of work then sometimes my contact with him could decrease. But that was partly becuase I am a very independent person and happy to work like this.
I was free, and encouraged, to sign up to any internal training I wanted.
