The Role
Being part of the British Red Cross is an incredible experience. I was welcomed and valued and praised for my efforts throughout the placement. My commitment was appreciated by the entire office and the team is nothing short of remarkable. The internship was varied and it was particularly interesting being at the Red Cross during the 'day-to-day' but also during an emergency appeal which provided a great insight into the importance and efficiency of the work of the Red Cross at times of crisis.
I was incredibly sad to leave the Red Cross as my colleagues were kind, friendly, intelligent, patient, enthusiastic and genuinely the best set of people I have ever had the pleasure of working with. From day one I was informed of the importance of interns within the organisation, and this was proven to me throughout the duration of my internship. I was treated with the utmost respect and kindness and they couldn't have been any better in any aspect.
I was guided through the processes in which I was involved but also given explanations of the other ongoing projects that they thought might be of interest to me.
I was very busy during the emergency appeal but never felt that there was too much to deal with. I was allowed to take on as much work as I felt comfortable with and given extra help where I needed it. Some days were quieter than others, but there was always something to do if I asked.
I was incredibly impressed with the amount of responsibility given to me. I was responsible for producing the first draft of official documents which were then reviewed by colleagues. Changes were made and these were explained to me. The entire process made me feel as though my work was valued and important.
All of the skills I developed will be very useful in future as I would like to pursue a career in the charity sector.
The Company
You could always here someone laughing. No matter the amount of pressure there was or how big the emergency was, the atmosphere was always incredible. People stayed positive and encouragement flowed. Everyone was always friendly no matter what, and this made a huge difference.
The internship was very well organised and I was given a clear schedule.
I felt as though I was properly exposed to the requirements of the job, which prepared me for the potential of seeking fulltime employment within the field of work.
Subsidised Canteen
I would love to work for the British Red Cross and my experience reaffirmed this.
The Culture
People were very sociable and friendly.
London is expensive but paid colleagues took this into consideration when organising events with unpaid interns.
It's London....
I volunteered outside of work and there were always events which we were encouraged to attend if we so wished. I also went to the English National Ballet Nutcracker Gala with some colleagues.
