The Role
This placement was a combination of shadowing the lead optometrist and working as an optical advisor on the shop floor. Both were extremely enjoyable as the former provided an insight into the working life of the fully qualified optometrist (what I aspired to be) and the latter was vital to learn the customer service skills required in this industry.
At first I did feel a bit isolated but as I got to know each member of the team I felt more at home.
Management would oversee my engagements each day and inform me of whether I was shadowing or whether I was needed on the shop floor.
The days were busy on the whole and I enjoyed this as I tend to thrive in a busy environment.
When I was dispensing on the shop floor, as I had prior experience, after familiarising myself with the choices of lenses they gave me more responsibility.
I learnt a great deal of skills, especially whilst I was shadowing which I took back with me to university to use in my own routine eye exam.
The Company
All store members got along and there was a lively atmosphere.
The placement was organised by the store manager and I was communicated directly by them throughout promptly.
The company provided a great deal of on-the-job training to help me to become familiar with the products and services.
Company Parties/Events
After this experience I was offered a place on the InPractice Summer Placement Programme.
The Culture
Colleagues would often go out during the week together and I felt that this really boosted the morale of the team.
Fairly expensive to socialise but manageable.
I didn't get to fully sample the nightlife but I know that there is generally a good social scene.
The store did not have many activities for me to take part in outside of working hours.
