    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed working with a like-minded team to aid customers in the glasses selection process.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Colleagues made me feel welcome from the start and although it was difficult as they had all been working together for many years, it felt like they were being genuinely friendly and that contributed to a positive experience.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The dispensing optician would always supervise my dispenses which really helped me to learn quickly. I also received one to one feedback sessions with the store manager.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I would say that I was never too overwhelmed with the work, rather the store was mostly busy and that I had enough time to fully give the customer the best possible dispensing experience.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As I was still in training, I was given a small amount of responsibility. This gradually increased as I became more familiar with the different styles of frames and lens options.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I took on board all of the feedback and feel that I came out of the placement being more confident in my abilities, and having newly acquired skills I was well equipped for my final year at university.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The store had a great team whom were very lively. It comprised of people from all sorts of backgrounds which made it all the more interesting.

  • All was communicated clearly and I knew what my duties were and the expectations of me.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company invested in spending a significant amount of time in training me to be able to dispense unaided on the shop floor.

  • From this work experience placement I was offered a pre-registration placement with Specsavers!

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Colleagues took part in numerous events. when I arrived on the first day I was invited to attend the drinks event for one of the directors in celebration of them completing a marathon!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Having lived and worked in London, I find the cost of living and socialising acceptable and does not drill a large hole into your bank account!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London comes alive at night! This is not to be missed by any means!

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes! My store often had many after work activities which I was able to get involved with.
