The Role
I enjoyed the responsibility I was given, but did not feel part of the team
My colleagues were friendly, but didn't try to make friends as they knew I was temporary
I was given some guidance at the start, but he was on holiday most of the time
When I had samples to work with in the lab I was quite busy, but at times I didn't have anything to do.
I was given responsibility of guiding my own project, and deciding what to do when.
The lab work and techniques I learnt will be extremely useful for my PhD, as I hadn't covered those techniques before.
The Company
People were happy and friendly most of the time.
I organised it myself by contacting the group, but the group leader was good at sorting out the relevant paperwork.
I received no official training, but informal teaching about the work the researchers were doing.
Flexi Time
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
If I were to work in academia, I would enjoy working with them
The Culture
Group pub trips every week.
Not too expensive or too cheap - there's student housing to living in
Reading's a big town, so has pretty good nightlife
There were opportunities if you looked for them, but things weren't necessarily offered.
