Overview
Literature reviews, report writing (editing and producing several drafts of an abstract) for my project linking mindfulness, and various types of compassion and forgiveness (as well as mental wellbeing), producing a professional poster surrounding a colleague's project to be presented in a conference, weekly in-person meetings with Dr. Rebecca Cheung
Skills
Had plenty of advice and assistance regarding abstract writing for a report, developed my skills in literature reviews (selecting more relevant, specific research to include)
Responsibilities
Me and my colleague both completed our own project, however due to my colleague's work being better and completed faster, I ended up taking on the responsibility of producing the professional conference poster for their project
Support & Guidance
I frequently submitted drafts of my work to Dr Rebecca Cheung, which we then went through and discussed in our weekly meetings. However, I felt that I lacked support and felt dismissed when being told that I needed to put in more work and seeing how much more praise and support my colleague was getting
Culture
We only saw each other in person in our weekly meetings, which felt comfortable but could sometimes be a little tense or awkward. Other than that, we worked primarily on our own which I was happier with.
Your Impressions
Overall, I can say that there were parts of my placement which I thoroughly enjoyed, mainly the specific content I was learning and researching for my project. Otherwise, I felt that the placement lacked motivation and energy, and was quite monotonous when completing the same work almost every week.
Yes
When applying for placements in the PY2PCP module, start looking and applying as soon as you can, as soon as the Summer just before second year starts. I had a fair amount of stress last minute looking for a placement I thought I would enjoy.
