The Role
Although it wasnt easy or perfect, all hiccups were mediated by a fantastic HR support system and my Professional colleagues gave me the best introduction into the working world that anyone could ask for. It made the anticipatory transition out of university seem much less daunting and is now an exciting prospect, I hope to go on to the Philips Graduate Scheme
The Major Projects team in Professional Lighting were like my second family. They were not only supportive and great personal developers, they challenged me so that I grew and could hold my own in terms of valuable work contribution which is a difficult confidence to build as a placement.
The Design and Commercial Director for Philips Lighting were priceless in their vested interest for my placement and soft skill development to be a success. I was not used as another pair of hands but nurtured into a valued resource. This applies to several areas of the Philips company, between my direct teams, HR, Recruitment and Administration I was never left to struggle unnecessarily.
The work load balanced out to a great amount, however there were extremely busy days but when you enjoy yourself and work hard as your input contributes to a team members output it felt worthwhile.
I was given my own projects to manage from start to finish however always had management to speak to if I was needing guidance or reassurance.
In terms of skills for life my placement is priceless, the change in attitude and work ethic will support me in my final year of university. It has also fleshed out my cv and transferable/soft skills which are somewhat more valuable in the Professional world than academic qualifications.
The Company
Professionally engaging, in an office of other people there are ups and downs but it makes you develop your communication and interpersonal skills.
In Professional Marketing which was my second rotation, I think it was managed very much to my personal development which was very helpful.
The company showed a vested interest in my training and development, I achieved a Philips recognised LED qualification, H&S Training as well as commercial experiences that were a one off opportunity.
Flexi Time

Working from home
Healthcare from home
I plan to return on the Graduate Scheme, Recruitment have made the process very straight forward as I have already worked well within the organisation and myself and team have showed desire to have me back in the company.
The Culture
Between Interns, placements and Graduates there was a great community feel. Nobody was excluded and we had regular social gatherings inside and outside of work.
Accomodation was quite expensive in Guildford as a placement however Graduates tended to live in shared accomodation which seemed to work.
Its a good laugh, very central so nothing is far out and it isnt difficult to get home. The nightlife is relatively cheap though!
Between sports events and regular work charity gatherings there was a real family feel within the organisation. Nobody is a stranger in Philips.
