    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My day to day varies quite a bit. On some days I will be on my feet all day, switching from one project to the next. Other days I will need to write reports or join meetings to discuss results I have obtained. There is no one thing or set of things I will be doing on a given day, it really depends on what work I have been given.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have. I've learned how to use a load frame through use of a controller, how to use a load cell and amplifier, how to conduct modal tests, use all types of new software, learned how to analyze vibration, load, pressure, ultrasonic bolt measurement data and much more. Ive gotten better at presenting results as well.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • So far yes. I've been responsible for handling real work and presenting results back to the test requesters. Over time I've also learned how to use more of the equipment in the lab so I've become more responsible and relied upon by my collogues.

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • As much as I have asked for. The people in my department have been incredibly understanding and more then happy to extend a helping hand should you ask for one.

    Culture

  • Cummins strives for excellence, and you can see it in the way they conduct themselves and their brand. They offer you room to make mistakes and give you a chance to learn from them instead of just throwing you under the bus.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have enjoyed my placement far more than I thought I would have. Its given me the chance to use the theory from university and apply it to real problems. I've been able to get stuck in and have an excellent balance of practical and desk work, along side a comfortable work life balance that Cummins promotes.

  • 7. Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins
  • Be genuinely interested in what you're talking about. Also I know it sounds lame but be yourself, a lot of applicants when asked about who they are will just list off Uni accomplishments instead of things from their personal life that would make them seem more genuine.
