    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role means I’m responsible for the recruitment of next year’s interns, which starts around August. Day to day, I work closely with the TA manager to source candidates both externally and internally as well as focus on projects such as social media campaigns, external employer branding and recruitment process optimisation. Whilst every day is different, some key tasks involve assigning candidate trainings, focusing on student charity, creating, and collecting surveys and arranging interviews. I work within the wider HR team allowing myself to network with a variety of people and roles!

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Whilst only being at JDE for a short time, I have developed multiple skills such as my communication. Being an HR intern means I am a key point of contact, especially for my fellow interns, when they have a query. This has enhanced my communication skills due to the fact that I am constantly reaching out to new people to gain the relevant information, but also communication is key in my day-to-day role when completing tasks such as interview arranging where several associates are involved. I have also developed my excel skills via the Learning and Development portal where I know I can go to develop any of my skills by taking a course, either online or in person, of which there are a multitude of different subjects to learn about.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, from day one I have been given the responsibility of different projects to handle, of course the main one being intern recruitment which I will lead from start to finish. The ability to own projects and complete them to the high standards of JDE make me aware that the work I complete has an impact on the company which makes me feel hugely part of the team, and not just like the intern.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I could never have imagined the level of support I would have gotten from starting an internship but everyone within my HR team has welcomed me and is always there to answer any questions. It has been the easiest start to an internship as far as the nerves go, there has never been a day where I felt anxious or uncomfortable. Everyone outside of the HR team is just as friendly and I feel I can go to anyone for general advice or just to network within the wider team. I also have 1:1s every week with my line manager to discuss my progress, projects, and any other query I might have.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Everyone within the office is extremely friendly and there is always someone around the coffee machines who is up for a quick chat. I know that many of the teams are very social which creates a lovely buzz type of atmosphere in the office. Everyone is able to express themselves and there is a great opportunity to be involved within DE and I which demonstrates JDEs inclusion for all. All of us interns are also involved in student charity where we get to raise money for our chosen charity, which is another opportunity to have a bit of fun but also do something for a great cause.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • So far, I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement and I cannot wait to see where it takes me, and to watch myself develop even further. My expectations have been reached and more. I love the amount of responsibility I have so I am able to make my internship my own, but also have the guidance and help of my line manager and the wider HR team to support my growth and make the most out of my year at JDE. I also have the opportunity to work from both sites, so I have been lucky enough to go on a tour of the factory to see the coffee making process here at Banbury, as well as travel to the Hurley site to meet all retail associates.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Jacobs Douwe Egberts
  • Be yourself. As I have said, JDE welcome all types of individuals. Make sure you research the company beforehand, so you are prepared for the interview and know what type of company JDE is. Before my interview, I looked up the website and found various useful videos to watch. Throughout your interview process, express your passion for the role and what you wish to get out of it, and ask questions. This is where you can find out what JDE can offer you in terms of personal and professional development. The interview process is an opportunity for you to hunt out the best suited placement for you so get what you want out of it!
