Researching new ingredients through literature and external suppliers. Designing and conducting experiments and trials, developing novel measurements, recording and analysing data, scouting new technology and communicating results to the technical leadership team and all R and D associates.
My role involved working closely with stakeholders in all areas of operations both internally and externally, in particular with Packaging Material Suppliers, Purchasing, Schedulers, and Packing Operations. I managed a portfolio of suppliers (for me this was mainly Tassimo materials) which involved the provision of an accurate forecast of material requirements and working with suppliers and key stakeholders to ensure sufficient capacity and replenishment strategies to meet business demands. I also tracked and conducted loss analysis on two Key Performance Indicators, as well as running frequent reports to assist the team in their responsibilities.
My role included responding to any new events arising within the plant that affect the manufacturing process. Such as responding to system failures that occurred on the site. I was given the responsibility to administrate critical equipment such as networking devices and I would almost certainly be maintaining Windows Server operating systems and vmware vSphere extensively as well as active directory management and group policies when requested. I also was involved in projects within the team that are to improve the site as a whole such as networking policies for cybersecurity upgrades and creating more extensive and easy to interpret documentation about the site IT infrastructure that had not existed before.
Designing, planning, and carrying out a range of different experiments. Researching past work done in my field . Meetings with other associates to aid research and socialise my own findings. My time is split roughly 60 % carrying out experiments and 40% planning those experiments, writing up findings etc.
Daily tasks include keeping the communications channels up to date and relevant including planning, review and evaluation. These channels include internal social media accounts, large all company meetings and various meetings. The role supports all functions across the business, so there is great opportunities to get exposure of the business and get involved in many different types of projects. Every day tends to be different in communications, with the chance to network externally as well as internally.
To develop new systems to support professional and single serve machine development. Involves daily team meetings discussing next steps and then carrying out work internally to plan research for these new systems. Responsibilities include fundamental research, mechanical design development, rapid prototyping and presenting of findings.
I really enjoyed working at JDE, the office environment is very relaxed and coffee breaks to discuss your work with other staff members or interns is encouraged. Quite a few interns are hired at a time for the R&D department which makes it easier when starting the internship because other people in the office are in the same boat.
I enjoyed my placement at Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE) extremely much. JDE has a wonderful culture where everyone is extremely friendly and even the most senior people are down to earth, always open for a conversation. I particularly liked the fact that I had a real job throughout the whole year and can say that I was given real responsibility. I felt supported and valued by my colleagues and was encouraged to propose my ideas
I really find my placement helpful for my future professional life. Indeed the environment of JDE gave me new challenges. I discovered the brand management and trade marketing in a professional structure (not retail), which was also new to me. As a French student, the challenge was also to learn in a foreign language, and I think that was a success. Everybody was very comprehensive with me and enables me to improve my English. Also, as the company was quite a new merger, it was for me very interesting to understand the stakes of a merger and what are the different aspect to take into account when it comes to brands.
