    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • A part of the Global finance team. Have a mix of month-end close responsibilities and various reporting responsibilities catered to different areas of business and individuals. Work on a monthly calendar/to do list, with areas of 'down time' which can be used for project work/personal development.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Developed and learnt a variety of skills. Able to learn multiple finance related skills (Excel, reporting, PowerBi, Oracle, Bolt) and also non finance related skills (Communication, team work, time management, problem solving skills). As part of my monthly activities I have been able to get exposed to opportunities to develop my skills, and also have the freedom during my 'down time' to learn skills I wish to learn/develop on.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given more responsibility than I expected, whilst also being manageable and having time to do my own learning/things I want to go deeper into. Being a part of month end meant the first 2 weeks of the month would be fairly busy, but the last 2 weeks of the month would be less busy/more flexible.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had multiple manager changes, this meant things were a little unstable specifically during my first few months as I was settling into the role. However, the management, colleagues I worked with really supported me during my first few months. The task list I had also supported me in settling in whilst I was undergoing manager changes, the overall documentation was a good basis to help me learn. Everyone was always willing to help!

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I felt like a part of the company and not just a placement student. I felt my opinions were always valued, and as an employee I felt I was always encouraged to speak up on the good and the bad. I felt there was always a focus on team working to bring great results collaboratively regardless if they were in another country the culture was consistent globally.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. There were definitely some issues and things didn't always go as planned, but that's what really helped me see the true values of the company/direct management. The issues which occurred I learnt a lot and think these really built my resilience.

  • Learn about the company, it's values and the overall business/what they do. Cummins in the UK isn't necessarily well known, but they have a lot to offer. Focus on volunteering, and other skills/experiences you can showcase to set you apart. Ensure you research the role, requirements, etc. prior to applying and prepare well for interviews to ensure you have the best chance at succeeding.
