    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I design mechanical components for battery structures, working closely with a senior engineer. The components can also be to meet testing needs, or for prototype building. A typical week consists of whole site engineering meetings, regular work, and then meetings with the people I am designing parts for, whether this is other mechanical engineers, validation engineers or system engineers

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt a huge amount of skills. This includes engineering drawing skills/GD&T, I have learnt an entirely new CAD software and have a much greater technical understanding of engineering. I have also been able to apply some knowledge from university within my role, but often I learn as I go

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Not an reasonable amount. I am responsible for my own design work, but none of this has been of high significance- ie, not on the main battery product. However, I have been responsible for the design, development, sourcing and supply of components for a very important test, which meant I played a key role in supporting the validation engineers and I attended the test to ensure the parts were used correctly

  • Please rate how meaningful the work you were doing was

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • A massive, massive amount. I was paired up with a very talented senior engineer on my first day, who guides me and provides me my work. He is my go to for any questions and any support I need, whenever I need it. All of my colleagues are super helpful and very very friendly- anyone will offer up their help if you ask, no matter what team.

  • Amazing. Working hours are super flexible and relaxed, whether in the office or from home. As long as you are completing your work and attending the correct meetings, you are doing perfectly. Regular breaks are encouraged, as is taking holiday which we receive a good amount of (25 days)

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • A great deal. My placement has confirmed for me that I do indeed want to be a mechanical engineer, and I know that there is a good company I can work with to achieve that goal. I have a year left at uni, and I would much rather continue working than go back.
