    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The role varies day to day and will depend on the engagement which you are assigned to - some teams invite interns to meetings and calls to listen in to understand how the audit process works. Alongside the work itself there are many opportunities to widen your understanding with the ability to complete 'EY Badges' in many subject areas. There are also sessions put on weekly (some optional and some compulsory) to assist your learning and professional development.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • As I did not have the largest accounting background before joining I have learnt a significant amount about audit. I had fairly good excel skills which helped me pick up the accouning aspect of the work quickly. Having also shadowed a partner for an afternoon I was able to sit in on many calls which showed a completely different perspective of the firm. I was very grateful for this opportunity and I learnt much more than I expected before joining.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • You are given a large amount of responsibility early on, I believe being 'thrown in the deep end' is a great way to learn. Other members of your team are always there to support you and answer any questions which you have about the work or if you do not understand what you are working on. It is reassuring that your senior will go over the work you have done therefore the worry of it being wrong is removed as it will be checked internally.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • From the first day my buddy was extremally supportive, he gave up a few hours to help set up all of the accounts that I would need and also told me any useful links which I may need for the duration of the 5 weeks. Throughout the internship, many different people who I worked with also supported me on the specific tasks which they set. There were however times where it would take a while for a response - mainly due to the hybrid work setup that the office has

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • From the offset both the culture and atmosphere was exceptional. Most of the interns came into the office everyday so we built very strong connections quickly, this was very useful as we were able to speak to each other about anything that we did not understand. Other people in the office were very willing to help; a partner who I sat near was extremally friendly and helped out with an issues that I had. People who I reached out to also were more than willing to help

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking about applying. The people who I worked with were extremally lovely and I feel like I learnt a lot more than I even expected to do so before joining. If I could have stayed for longer I would have as the time flew by. It was a great experience to understand what day to day life would be like during a graduate job.

  • 7. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to EY
  • Apply early and be persistent, I applied late which led to being slightly stressed as the internship approached. I was having to chase up the paperwork being completed to ensure that it was all complete before the start of the internship. Apart from that the process is very easy to follow and understand and the student recruitment team are great at communicating. They are very helpful and accommodating for any questions that you have or anything which is specific to you, e.g. travel arrangements.
