    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role at the company was mainly focussed around Channel 1 work which involved working with audit clients. We would look at their systems and different controls that they have to maintain those systems and make sure that we had complete confidence that these controls were being properly implemented. For me, this involved updating testing from previous periods and making sure that the evidence we were provided with was correct. Typically, I would interact with many different colleagues daily from a staff consultant level up to manager/director level.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills throughout this internship. My skills surrounding Excel have developed massively, from a fairly basic level to a mostly competent level - purely from working with it day-to-day and having to overcome problems. Alongside this, I had a surface level experience with Power BI to visualise data in a dashboard format. Further, I learnt many leaderships skills through the StudyFlex program that EY had arranged - from managing a hybrid team to learning to have emotional intelligence in all aspects of work.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a fair amount of responsibility during my internship. I had plenty of real client work that I was trusted to do independently. This work would then be reviewed by a Senior Consultant and commented on, for which I would then fully complete. Aside from this, I sat in on many calls and was given a chance for input in many instances. In one instance I was able to sit in on a call with three colleagues working in the USA.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The support and guidance I received was of the highest standard. I had a buddy which I met on my first day in the office and a counsellor which, although unfortunately off with COVID for the first week, was always available for a chat. The engagement I was on had both my buddy and counsellor as part of the team so any problems I encountered were always quickly remedied. My buddy was extremely knowledgeable and helped me develop many skills throughout the experience.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture was extremely welcoming and overall, a very enjoyable experience. Every person I have met throughout the company could not have been more helpful and knowledgeable. The company culture is hugely based around employee satisfaction and even as an intern I felt that hugely. There were many socials for which we could all get to know each other and, in my experience, they were extremely enjoyable. Overall, I could not have wished for a better atmosphere.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the internship. My colleagues were all extremely helpful and I have made a huge amount of connections that I otherwise would not have. Everything in the office was tailored towards bettering employee experience and I always felt satisfied with the comfort level whilst working. The work I did, whilst not the most fulfilling, was interesting to do and it was made sure that I was always busy whilst at work so I never had a particularly dull moment. Overall, the internship was great.

  • 7. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to EY
  • The experience is what you make of it. There are always people checking up and making sure that you are busy but to make the most of the experience make sure that you put yourself out there to get involved with all of the opportunities provided. Also, do not be afraid to talk to more senior colleagues - there's no one too senior for a chat. If you are particularly interested in an area of work that a Partner specialises in then you can absolutely get in contact with them and have a chat. So overall, make the most of the experience because you can do a lot more than is on the surface by just networking.
