    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Daily role involves completing order intakes, analyzing and interpreting a large amount of data. Distributing reports to the appropriate parties and supporting the account reps with any problems. Main focus of role tends to be interpreting data and using a lot of Excel. Reports are divided according to weekly, monthly and quarterly requirements. Weekly report periods tend to be more quiet as opposed to be quarterly reports which can be very busy. The role involves a lot of time on your laptop.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot about Excel in my role, which acts as a transferable skill. Cummins has there own specific IT programs which I have become very familiar with, although this may not be a software I'm able to use in other companies I have developed my skills surrounding Cummins specific IT programes. I have also learnt quite a lot about just being in the work place simple things like work place confidence.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I am given responsibility for particular tasks, however my one complaint would be that as my skills have developed my responsibility hasn't correlated with this. In my particular team I am left to be very independent and organize my own workload effectively, which is nice. However as I've came to the end of my placement I would of liked my responsibility to increase further as I feel I have developed and would be able to handle it.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My particular team was really nice and understanding. I was given a handover with the previous placement student however this was done over Zoom because of covid - I feel I would of benefited more from learning in person. My manager takes time to explain things to me if I don't understand however on the whole you are left to complete work pretty independantly with work instructions there as prompts however this is not a negative as I think doing things by yourself can help you learn quicker as opposed to having watch.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Company culture was great, Cummins offers a scheme called Every Employee Every Community (EEC), this gives you the opportunity to get involved with community involvement which is really enjoyable and gives you the opportunity to meet lots of different people. People around plant tend to be very friendly always say hi and will make an effort to engage in conversation with you. Cant really fault the culture and general atmosphere as it is a pleasant working environment.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Positives - My placement was enjoyable, I had a lovely team. I learnt a lot about just simplying the working environment. People are very welcoming on the whole and the community engagement is one of my favorite things that Cummins offers. Lots of other placement students, which is nice so theres a big community of you. Negatives - Limited graduate positions avaliable compared to placement Would of personally liked my responsibility to increase as my time within the placement progressed.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Cummins
  • Be yourself. Show your passion for community involvement and highlight some of the projects Cummins have taken part in, research the brand the vision and the mission. Apply and go for it, product portfolio is quite complicated if your not from an engineering background so defenitley spend time researching gensets, coolpacs and engines. There are lots of different areas within Cummins not just engineering eg marketing, finance, IT and HR - engineering background is not necessary.
