Overview
My role focused on day-to-day problem solving, data analysis, increasing yield, performance tracking, loss prevention and continuous process improvement. As well as, implementing solutions by designing, raising funds, planning and managing resources to complete commissioning. Of course all whilst supporting the full-time process engineering team.
Skills
I learnt so many new skills and gained a tonne of practical knowledge. It really allowed me to see my chemical engineering degree in practice for the first time. I also developed my soft skills greatly, especially my communication skills.
Responsibilities
I was given a tonne of responsibility overall. It started small but from day one and only grew from there. I was trusted and relied upon just any other member of the team. It really allowed me to push myself, earning and grabbing every new opportunity presented to me.
Support & Guidance
The team was super supportive, they are there to help you grow. Your success is their success and that culture really helps you thrive. I had weekly meetings to review what we were happy with and what we wanted to focus on; both as a student but also as a person.
Culture
My immediate team was like a little family, we helped each other at a moments notice and their support was great. It is all about learning and improving as a team. The wider team and managers were all friendly and accessible.
Your Impressions
I loved it, I could not have asked for a better experience. I know I got so much out of it but also I could how I had been able to give back to the company in the work I did. I could see both the value of the year for myself, the team and the company. It has helped me massively going forward in my degree and job hunt.
Yes
The manufacturing environment is fast-paced and the people you meet are diverse both as people but also in their roles. Be prepared to adapt, be curious and focus on your soft skills. Being a member of the team and wider plant allows you to do your best work. You won't be expected to know everything but show you want to learn as much as possible.
