    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Daily tasks include keeping the communications channels up to date and relevant including planning, review and evaluation. These channels include internal social media accounts, large all company meetings and various meetings. The role supports all functions across the business, so there is great opportunities to get exposure of the business and get involved in many different types of projects. Every day tends to be different in communications, with the chance to network externally as well as internally.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Over my placement I have developed many skills such as public speaking, organisation and attention to detail, but also industry skills specific to a role in internal communications career. These include being responsible for large pieces of communications in quarterly Townhalls and writing Communications packs. You are given a lot of responsibility in this role, and so I learned to be accountable for the work I was doing which was great.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility throughout my placement year at JDE. Being part of a smaller team, in a very lean business, the interns are given real jobs with real responsibilities. In the role of corporate communications the tasks and projects you are given means you learn and develop in the role fast which is great. Throughout the year I have been given important tasks which are visible across the business meaning that I got the exposure I needed for the role quickly.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • From the very start of my placement at JDE I felt incredibly supported in my role, by my line manager as well as other associates in the business. My line manager worked very closely with me throughout the whole placement to make sure I was understanding the role and the tasks that I was given, but gave me the space to learn in equal measure. The culture here meant that I learned very quickly that the interns who work at JDE are valued and cared for exceptionally well. I was offered advice and support from everyone I have met, even if our roles do not directly coincide. Throughout the year there was opportunities to learn the role, and also for personal development through objective setting and reviews as the year went on. It was also made clear to me who I could turn to for support and guidance at every opportunity.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The culture at JDE is incredibly supportive and people focused. There are many opportunities to get involved in social events and activities outside of your role responsibilities which is really fun. I feel that the associates who work at JDE are well connected and engaged with the business, caring about the work that they do and the people they work with. The company also takes pride in charity, sustainability and voluntary initiatives, giving the people who work at JDE the opportunity to get involved in groups and projects that they have a passion for!

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement from start to finish. I felt that I was challenged and pushed to work hard, developing industry specific skills as well as on a personal level whilst being guided and supported along the way. I really enjoyed working with my team, as well as getting involved in groups and projects outside the scope of my work.

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Jacobs Douwe Egberts
  • From the very first interview over the phone I felt as though the company was interested in me and the value that I could bring to the business - they were interested in me and my ambitions. Even on the day of the in-person interviews and assessment centre which can be very nerve wracking I felt comfortable. The people who were interviewing me were so dynamic and enthusiastic about the company that it made me want to work in a place like that. It was emphasised to me many times that I was there to learn and develop on the job, and so it didn't matter how much I knew at the start because I was there to learn along the way.
