    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the tasks I was given however there were times when workload was less than expected. This did lower my enjoyment as I don't like feeling useless or bored.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by the colleagues around me, including those who I didn't work directly with. They made an effort to know me and were always friendly. Felt less valued by my supervisors - they were incredibly busy so to a certain extent this was understandable.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisors were were both very busy, and although when I was able to see them they were very helpful, it was difficult to get a hold of them and go through my work with. There was not much contact with them over my 12 weeks.

    1/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • For periods after I was given projects I was kept busy, however there were often few days each week where I wouldn't have much to do and struggled to get a hold of my supervisors. This did lead me to finding other work to do, and allowed me to see other areas of the business and work with other people.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Most of my projects required speaking to lots of different people in all areas of the plant. Therefore most of my work was independent and I was allowed to plan my own days and work. I was trusted to carry out tasks that are important in the long run however nothing had imminent affects.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Although my placement was not directly linked to the career area I would like to work in, it tied in to many areas of my course and to previous classes studied. It gave me a good insight into an industrial landscape and gave me a confidence boost I feel I needed. I greatly improved my skills in communication, reporting, admin and excel which are all incredibly useful in any field and particularly all areas of chemical engineering.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office atmosphere was really good - possibly one of my favourite things about my internship. From being shown where the coffee machine was to having my own desk near other summer placements it was all very enjoyable.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There was no project previously planned for many of the summer placements. For things such as plant tours, or inductions, these did not happen until much later through the placement, often being discussed not to be followed through.

    2/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Apart from working on previous skills and having the opportunity to be immersed in a different workplace environment I wasn't trained in anything particular. However, this was never expected and so it didn't detract from my experience.

    1/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Car

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would definitely consider working in a different sector EGGER, specifically the chemicals company they have as this is more relatable to my degree. However the company was a fantastic company to be a part of and I would love to work for a company with similar values in the future.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes! All other placements were great fun and we were able to have lunch together. We've agreed to meet up at some point later in the year.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Plenty of places and options about ranging between different supermarkets to nice restaurants and bars.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Fairly standard local club and pubs, which make for a goodnight out with a good bunch of people.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were opportunities for events such as a charity walk however I was unable to attend. There are local sports clubs etc which are completely non-work related.

    2/5
